Tunic: I bought a Moses costume. The tunic is passable, the rest of the costume is junk.
Sandals: These should be easy. Most shoe stores should have what i’m looking for.
Belt: A leather or rope belt shouldn’t be too hard to find. Although, i’m not much of a shopper, so if anyone knows the best places to look for something like this, i’m all ears.
Crown of Thorns: Here’s where it starts to get difficult. Do flower shops sell thorn branches? Is it hard to fashion a crown from branches. I suppose it’s like making a wreath, although i’ve never made a wreath before. At worst, i could just make a crown out of normal branches.
That Sash Thing He Has Draped Over His Shoulder and Around His Waist: Just what is this thing? How big is it? Would a blanket or bedsheet work? Most importantly, how does it wrap around someone? I’ve seen many pictures of it, i’m just not sure how it’s held up, especially the part that wraps around the waist. Does anyone have more information on this article of clothing?
The crown of thorns was not a regular part of His daily wear. If you are dressing for the crucifixion your choice will be different then dressing for Jesus’ ministry or after resurrection.
I made a crown of thorns once for a church Good Friday event. I made it out of some thorny branches of a bush we had. It lay on the altar along with three nails and it made a nice display.
So I got stickers in my hands, as I suppose those bully-boy Roman soldiers got stickers in their hands when they made a crown of thorns for Jesus.
You do not want to be wearing a real crown of thorns. You really do not want to be wearing a real crown of thorns.
It’s true. Public humiliation was a big part of public executions and the condemned was always stripped completely naked prior to being crucified. The loincloth is just artisitc licence; he would’ve been wearing the crown of thorns and nothing else.
Is this for a church thing? If so, you might consider some traditional symbolism. The robe should be white (purity) and the sash should be purple (royalty, understated). But otherwise, the symbolism might be lost on your audience.
