I’m just curious is all about this…would we be better off or worse?
Whose religion? Which Life? The cereal or the board game?

I’m talking about no religion…would we descend into anarchy, or would have universal peace…this question has been perplexing me a long long time
I’m as confused as a baby in a topless bar
John Lennon in Imagine suggested that a world without religion would be utopia. Personally, I think we’d just find some other reason to hate each other.
Hey, manny! Get on the ball! Great Debates, and don’t spare the horses!
descend into anarchy? maybe if morals didn’t exist, but without religion i really doubt that would happen.
i think more than anything it depends on the individual. if there was no relgion, i’d be pretty much exactly who i am, right now.

Yer pal,
Satan
let me put it simply, would we all be animals?
um, we ARE all animals. Except for my boss, who is some type of vegetable or inert mineral.
Jay let me answer your question once in for all…
If there were no religion at present then man would create one much like we have done for thousands of years k?
So the question is a moot point brother, don’t bother wondering about it anymore and move on.
umm let’s see are we in GQ’s? Maybe we need to pack up and head for Great Debates.
“I’m the best there is Fats. Even if you beat me, I’m still the best.”
(Paul Newman in The Hustler)
maybe i’m wrong, but i don’t think jay means if all of a sudden religions dissapeared, but rather that they were never an issue. in that case, if something doesn’t exist, how does one decide to make up variations of it?
“If anybody wants a sheep, that is proof that he exists.”
reminds self not to get into a game of billiards with whats his name…thanks…it really didn’t answer my question but it sure made a hell of alot of sense
I guess a lot less people would die every day. You know, the jews fighting arabs, christians fighting moslems, blah blah, shit like that. Oh, wait, that would stop most war, can’t have that…Not to mention the LBMB would have little to talk about.
Jay, I apologize for the sarcasm, not appropriate for a GQ thread.
It’s hard to imagine - “religion” comes in many forms and variations, if you think about it in a loose context. It can be anything that a person feels strongly about, a philosophy, a way to explain the Human Condition. A way to live a life - a lifestyle. Some people treat football or vegetarianism or a million other things as a psuedo-“religion”. They are things they feel strongly about, in a personal way. (Not that I am comparing Star Trek fans to Catholics, just saying that the feeling of personal intensity is there in both.)
It’s a personality thing. If there was no religion (where no people worshiped a diety) there would still be football or vegetarian or Star Trek (or whatever) “religions”. And I’ll bet there would still be wars, or contentions over something or another. And let’s not forget the biggest “religion” of all - money. Plenty of wars would be fought over that.
And…why isn’t this in Great Debates yet?
Look around, what do you see?
If North America shares a common God it must be money…

Thanks for replying to my question…It sort of makes sense now

Mega sed: maybe i’m wrong, but i don’t think jay means if all of a sudden religions dissapeared, but rather that they were never an issue. in that case, if something doesn’t exist, how does one decide to make up variations of it?
If religion were never an issue then there would be no mankind…because its mindkinds nature to create religions. Thus tis my point that it is a moot point.
Geezz I feel like I am in Great Debates here…my haid is spinnin…
Up your butt and around the corner.
aha - and if it wasn’t mankinds nature to do so, then what?
“If anybody wants a sheep, that is proof that he exists.”
Funny you should mention that. I was gonna leave this one alone because it seemed to have died a natural death and because moving a thread is a PITA.
But since it seems intent on being resurrected…

Perhaps I should have said that there wouldn’t be a mindkind as we now know it.
Then we wouldn’t be the mankind that we all know and love now would we? And we really have no way of knowing what another type of mankind would think or do at all. I still say itsa moot point.
