What would you do if you were going bald?

GLH-9

I’ve seen myself bald. Not pretty. Now see myself getting there naturally. Also not good. Expensive as hell but the transplant seems my only hope.

Poll should include men and women. I watched my sister struggle very hard emotionally during a stressfull period during her life which resulted with her losing patches of hair for about two years. I would of taken her place in a second if I could of, and just shave it all off.

I would shave it, and consider getting an awesome head tattoo.

Given my family history, I probably (probably because on my mother’s side, my grandfather started balding in his early 20s, but on my father’s side it is the early 60s; so it is probably safe to say that I inherited my father’s genes, or can they mix and cause balding at an intermediate age?) don’t have to worry about it for another 35 years or so, and I’ll be over 60 by then, which isn’t anywhere as bad as going bald in your 20s. Also, on both sides hair loss starts at the front and advances back with no thinning on the top until it reaches that point (well, at least on my father’s side; my maternal grandfather was almost totally bald as far back as I could remember, but there are pictures of him when he was younger), which to me doesn’t look as bad as if it started at the top first.

While I was vacationing last year, my daughter and nephew (both 10 at the time) and I bought several packages of better quality temporary tattoos. I have a numer of real ones with a tribal theme, so I nabbed the pack of temporary tribals. Over the couple weeks we were at the beach, I put various temporaries on my head, removing them every couple days as I shaved. I actually got lots of compliments, even from older people, over a tribal-style lizard I put across the side of my head. The one that got reactions everywhere, basically all inquiring about how much it must have hurt, was one that was supposed to be an armband that I wore as a saggital crest.

I am going bald, and I am not doing a thing about it. I wouldn’t mind if it all fell out but I am not going to take the time to help it along.

I split the side of my head open in a sledding accident when I was skid. I can’t remember which side. the only reason why I might shave me head is to find the scar. Sometimes I think it is on the right, other times, on the left.

It does. I could have included wigs as a choice though but that goes under the other option. Women can get hair restoration surgery or do nothing.. not sure if there is a Rogaine for women, and I know Propecia doesn’t work on them.

Yes, there is Rogaine for women.

So apart from the “Propecia” option, the others could be applicable for women responding to the poll as well.

My aunt is losing her hair and was contemplating hair restoration, but she hasn’t done it as of yet because she has not found out whether her hair loss is genetic and likely to continue, or brought on by something else.

As I mentioned upthread, a woman underwent the procedure the same day I did and, as far as I’m aware, surgery is the only sure way of restoring hair growth, but yeah, I would say health-related causes should be considered, regardless of gender, before opting for hair restoration. After all, the procedure is somewhat expensive, and not covered by medical insurance.

I still take Propecia because my doctor prescribed it, although I’m less than convinced it’s doing anything, but it is an option women don’t have.

Too late, I’m already there.

FWIW, I’m playing with the hand I was dealt.

I wish I was as bald as a cue ball so that I would never again have to have a haircut. I also wish I would never again have to shave

I’m female, mid-twenties. I’d shave it all off and wear a beanie.

This. I’d probably look horrible bald, but I’d give it a shot.

Fortunately, given my ancestry, this isn’t a question I have to worry about (excepting illness.)

I inherited my hair from my dad’s side of the family. They didn’t start going grey till way late in life - in fact, when my dad died at 72, he still had more brown than grey. In return for keeping our color longer, we get to keep less of it.

All 3 of Dad’s sisters, as well as his mother, had very, very thin hair that got thinner as they got older. My aunts all wore hairpieces and/or wigs in their later years. I have now reached the beginning of my later years at 58, and my hair is most definitely very thin and fine and straight. I don’t think I’ll go the wig route. If I get down to a few wisps, so be it. I’ll save a fortune on shampoo!

And a lot less work.

I’ve been balding since I was about 18. My hair was a mess when I had it and I really wasn’t sad to see it go. I have very fine hair and about a dozen cowlicks. Even when I had it I wore a hat rather than try and tame the mess. Now I just keep it short. Looks very distinguished with the beard.

I started to lose some hair in the front more than 20 years ago (almost 50 now)-a friend said that jojoba oil would help slow down the loss rate, and I’ve been using jojoba-based conditioners ever since. Still have most of my hair now, tho I do lose a tiny percentage each year.

Hey, what’s more important, the ability to have sex, or the ability to keep your hair, which makes you more attractive, so you can have more… oh, wait…
