Too late to edit: That’s if I were male. If I’m still me, I’d probably buy a wig or something.
I went ‘other’ and would shave it clean if my bald spot became noticeable.
My dad had a sweet Pompadour, and when his bald spot ‘blossomed,’ it was a startling effect. from straight on, he looked just fine. In profile, it looked like someone had taken a laser and cut a 45 degree angle off the back of his head.
I would shave my head.
Don’t knock the surgical solution until you’ve tried it, that is if having a full head of hair is important to you as it was for me.
I am going to have to go ahead (heh) and agree with this. I have resisted shaving my head as I do not think I have a nicely shaped skull, and for me, shaving it all off has been equivalent to trying to hide something. If you like shaving your head that’s one thing, but for me shaving it all off when baldness became apparent was like trying to run away from something.
My baldness has not prevented me from marrying, fathering kids, holding a decent job, or pursuing athletic activities. There is nothing to hide, and nothing to really even think about when it comes to my hair, other than avoiding a scalp-sunburn.![]()
Nobody has a nicely shaped skull. Nobody. Back when I was shaving, it was over a month before I could look in a mirror without laughing.
Take the most dignified rout possible. Depending on the pattern my baldness took here are the options as I see them for me.
Option 1. Call it the Bruce Willis approach. If the hair is thinning evenly, shave down to a very short length in the beginning and when it starts to go completely in areas, shave it all off forever.
Option 2. Call it the Captain Picard approach. If the top is going, going, gone. Keep the back and sides military short and the top always shaved clean.
Options I personally would never take but can understand how others would are modern transplant surgeries and drugs like Rogaine. I’m as vain, or close to it, as the next guy but I will never put my health at risk for my hair. Surgery is never without risk and drugs including Rogaine can have side effects. Just not worth it to me.
Options to NEVER consider:
Comb over. Worst case Donald Trump.
No option involving baldness and a ponytail ever works.
Toupee. I know they can be done well but if you are ever exposed all dignity is out the door.
Full wig. Even worse that the toupee. Dignity men, keep it safe.
Spray on hair. Just stop.
That was my vote. I shaved my remaining hair down to a shadow. Thank you jean luc picard for showing me the way.
