What would you do if you were on the verge of becoming homeless?

There’s a difference between forcible deportation and giving people stuck on an island a route off of it if they so desire. How coercive is Hawaii’s policy?

I’d move in with my mother and brother. It wouldn’t be an ideal situation, but better than the alternatives. I’d still face difficulties as I’d have to somehow pay for either health insurance or rather expensive medical needs.

What is wrong with this country that people willing to work actually have to face this possibility?

Amen. I work hard for people who both like and profit by my work. So why is it endless four-month contracts without any possibility of job security? Because it’s convenient for them to be able to get rid of me at any time, and vary my hours as it suits them with no repercussions. And if I complain, well, there are a thousand more of me waiting in the wings.

O brave new world!

Too bad the Necromancer (eoede4921) has not rejoined the discussion.

Being smart won’t help you get on game shows (except maybe Jeopardy!). They are looking for enthusiasm and out-going personality. Same thing in job hunting.

We have family near and far that would be able to help us out temporarily.

Knock on wood, the economy in this area is still robust enough and our networks strong enough that I think we could recover from setbacks sooner than later. And if it absolutely comes down to it, I’m perfectly willing to pack up to China or somewhere similar to teach English.

Agreed. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from reading the dope, it’s that I have a truly amazing immediate and extended family. If my life went pear-shaped, I’d pack up what I could and go home to my parents to rebuild.

Not sure it’s that new of a world. I have worked my entire career without any sort of contract, where my employer can fire me any day at will. Fortunately for me, I have only had 2 different employers over a 25+ year career.

I’d cry a lot and then move in with my parents.

There are friends who I would much rather stay with, but I feel like it’d be hard on our friendship. Staying with my parents would be hard on me, but while my parents probably wouldn’t be thrilled that I’m at the end of my rope, they’d sooner die than let me be homeless and it wouldn’t be a strain on us. So I’d grind my teeth, and stay with them. But I would legit have to be one penny away from having nowhere to live before I did that.

I’d just like to say something I have said in other threads; I live in a suburb of Austin and every business in my town (Cedar Park) is hiring. No exaggeration. So if you are out of work and can’t find a job, hitchhike to Austin and go to work. If you get a waitress job you may have to work at a couple of places to afford rent but if you can do anything the least bit skilled (oil changes, retail sales, etc.) then for sure you can get by. It’s very strange to see how many people in other places are facing disaster for lack of a job when everywhere I go has “help wanted” signs in the window. Cedar Park is opening a bunch of new businesses and I have no idea where they are going to find help since the existing businesses are “NOW HIRING”.

Yes, but do you have to formally apply for your job three times a year? I don’t mind being an at-will employee. What I mind is not knowing whether I’ll have a job over the summer.

I’d squat in my current home. Based on what I’ve seen and heard, I could probably live there for years before my mortgage provider managed to crowbar me out.

I could ask my parents for help, and they would probably be happy to provide it, but I would have a hard time bearing the thought of being further indebted to them (in a literal sense), inasmuch as I don’t exactly have a lot of happy feelings towards them. Add to that the shame and embarrassment of feeling like a defective failure, who has so many seeming advantages coupled with a baffling inability to capitalize on them.

Blast!

An economy based on neoliberal principles of welfare for the rich and free market discipline for everybody else will end up like that. The crazy thing is, this state of affairs didn’t arrive with a military coup here or in most developed countries, whereas that’s often what it took in the poorer places! It just seemed to happen…

Blast.

Lemmythesesl2, what type society do you envision having no homelessness?

Very tough thread to read (though I will note that a lot of people seem to have a lot of pets). Do posters feel that more financial education at the high school,or college level would help or is it all circumstance based?

I can’t imagine the stress. It’s not something I routinely think about but it does come up from time to time. I just hope everyones situation improves.

Given the number of people these days working minimum wage jobs or still unemployed who have college degrees… no, I don’t think “more education” is the answer in *these particular *circumstances. I think we have:

  • more job seekers than jobs in many categories
  • serious problems matching qualified applicants with potential employers
  • clueless HR departments with nonsensical requirements, often unknowable to the prospective applicant, that arbitrarily eliminate potential candidates.
  • employers who refuse to even look at someone who is currently unemployed no matter how qualified.
  • intensification of biases against race, age, gender, disability, etc.

Yes, there are still issues with high school drop outs and the like, but right now you have people with college degrees flipping burgers. That’s a serious problem.

Perhaps the problem may be that too many people are going to college to get degrees that are of questionable value? Put another way, there are a lot of colleges offering a lot of degrees and many of them may not be worth the time, effort and energy (and money) put into getting them.

There still appears to be a lack of skilled trades people (welders, electricians etc.) and we may have done a disservice to many people by insisting that everyone has to go to college.

haha, i did not even think anyone would reply! i came back here to re-read my post to find a multitude of posts. sorry for the absence. and thanks for posting.

ya, i don’t have a problem moving overseas either. i’m just wondering how i’d pay my student loans from overseas. i’m gonna call fed loan tomorrow to kind of hash it all out, worst-case-scenario stuff, to see what happens.

i rent, no mortgage for me.

like someone said, a conversion van sure beats the cold ground. a gym membership sounds like an idea. i’ll start checking out craigslist for conversion vans. thanks.
