What would you do if you won the lottery?

1.) Pay off credit cards.
2.) Pay off student loans.
3.) Buy Car
4.) Buy some very expensive alcohol.
5.) Buy home theatre system.
6.) Pay rent for roommates and I.
7.) Stay in school for a good long while.

I would donate generously to worthy causes, such as the American Civil Liberties Union

I’d go active duty tomorrow. My wife could fly to school every day. And I’d buy the new Bugatti Veyron. And the Ferrari Enzo. And the Lamborghini Murcielago.

You get the idea. But even if I were a billionaire, I’d still be in the Air Force.

After taking care of my immediate family, I would buy and refurbish an old farmhouse on a lot of land, convert the barn into a huge garage, and do the following:

Go to a Fine Arts College.
Take up an apprenticeship with a great metalworker/custom car guy
Donate some cash to my High School Art Dept.

I couldn’t remain lazy, I’d have to keep making attempts to better myself, and learn more about what interests me. Basically the professional student deal. Learning about history, philosophy, the arts, along with various forms of craftsmanship. I guess my wishes are fairly simple, I just wish to be a sponge of sorts. I’d also get more involved in my auto hobby, and start buying old cars and the equipment needed to restore/customize/repair them professionally.

I do that stuff now, but as a hobby.

Oh, nice fantasies here.

I’d quit my job (after I trained someone to come in and take over - can’t leave people unprotected), buy a big old house in the country, and raise kids and dogs.

Finish my degree, and then just take classes about things I’m interested in.

Buy a business for my husband so he wouldn’t get bored.

Write novels, and buy all the research (and other) books I wanted.

Set up a parent mentor organization (for families with kids in special education) that is fully independent of school funding, so that the parent mentors can actually give advice and be real advocates instead of having to hold their tongues and fear for their jobs.

Donate money to the local school district but tie the funds into smaller class sizes for all elementary-age students.

I would pay off every debt I have to begin with. I would set up college accounts for all three of my children. I would buy a nicer “senior friendly” account for my parents. I would have a housedesigned for me with a large grounds for my pets, my rose garden, and my koi pond. I would have an entire floor just for me complete with a gym, an office and my own living and dining areas, balconies and access to the grounds. I would employ a maid, and a cook, …and I would quit my frickin’ job. That is about all I want to do. I want to work out, garden, and enjoy my family before they are all grown up and move away from home…of course the odds of that are about the same as winning the lottery.

Oh yeah and every summer I would travel all summer with the family.

Doors, with that kind of money you ought to go for your officer’s commission.

I’d start by paying off debt, mine and my parents.

Then I’d meet with a lawyer friend of mine. I’d give her a simple offer: I’ll put her on annual retainer, at above her normal rate, [frivolity] on the condition that she wear her corset when she’s working on my business. [/frivolity] (Background: At WorldCon a few years back, she and some friends bought corsets from one of the dealers, and then they paraded around the con all weekend as the wenches of their club.)

I’d take a small piece of money for myself, then lock up the millions in a 5-year CD or comparable, so that it’s simply NOT AVAILABLE for a while. That’ll give me a few years to get rid of the money-seekers and to set up an appropriate structure to handle the money.

Then things to do with the money, once everything’s said and done.

  • Start schools in Gaza and Judea & Samaria (the latter two being the “West Bank”), and give Palestinian kids a quality education without any propaganda. Not even pro-Israeli, as tempting as it might be.

  • Start a movie production studio. Pay for good writing and acting talent, bugger off the stars with attitudes.

  • Go on a dive trip at least one weekend EVERY month. Do a live-aboard dive trip every year (where you live on the dive boat, and can dive as much as you can physically handle).

  • Become a Big Name in town. Politics, philanthropy, real estate, labor unions… there’s lots of options.

  • Run for Congress. Just because.
