(lottery winnings in Canada are tax-free, I believe, so 50K straight up for me… assuming this money comes from a lottery!)
We don’t have any debt that we can’t currently cover (just some on a couple of credit cards, but that was budgeted for anyways) so I’d spend about 10K and get my private pilot license (something I’m seriously considering getting the money for anyways) and place the rest in a decent investment/savings whatever to use it to go back to school - I’m unhappy with my current BSc and think I want another one! Again, this is something my husband and I are trying to figure out if I can do anyways. Anything left over will be spent on regular bills: credit card, rent, food, etc.
Oh, and I’d get a second cat (also something planned for 2007 anyways!).
I’m retired, but Mrs. Nott still works to pay the mortgage. $50K would let her retire, with about $20K left over. Both vehicles are paid for already, and we pay off the credit cards every month. The only debt right now is the mortgage. I think a long trip to Europe in the spring sounds good.
New windows
New siding
New furnace
Finish digging the stumps buried in the yard 20+years ago when it was built, refill w/ loam & reseed with grass… heck, probably have a company come in and reseed the whole thing properly… and care for it for the first year.
If any was left over, it’d go into the college fund for the Butlerette.
I’d bung quite a lot of it into the house–new roof, remodel the kitchen and bath, knock out the interior walls and ceiling, put in a loft bedroom and built in bookshelves and such, new double pane windows, french doors in the front leading out to a sunroom, landscaping, stuff like that. The way Portland housing prices are going, I’d realize a higher rate of return by making the house spiffier than any other investment, and I’d really like the house better too. I’d also put a bit of cash into body work on the car and a paint job–get that nice 3.4L V6 shoehorned in there and rebuild the transaxle to handle the higher horsepower.
If I had enough left over I’d buy a roach coach and start a business–I like cooking and that would be a fab way to make extra money by travelling to places I want to go anyway…
Your joke is funnier than mine. I’m not even going to post it.
And I’d save about 5 grand for living expenses for some time and put the rest of it in low risk long term investments. I’m in no hurry.
