I can’t say I’d give anything up, since wi-fi is so readily available now. I’d just swing by the library, a restaurant chain, or something similar. Not having my own connection would change how I use the internet, but I wouldn’t make some big (or even small) sacrifice to keep it. It’s worth the $30 bucks or so my 15Mbps connection runs me, but that’s about it.
Coffee, chocolate and fast food.
How could anyone give up sex for the internet? Do some of you get more satisfaction from the internet then sex? Oh yeah, there’s porn. But it’s a poor excuse for the real thing.
I think you’ve misunderstood the question.
I’d give up Coffee Chocolate/Fast food/My car/The right to vote pretty readily. If it were EVERYONE has to give up the right to vote to keep the internet, well, no I wouldn’t go along with that. But just me? Sure.
Showering… I dunno. If it were give up showering for a year or lose the internet forever, sure, I’d stock up on deodorant. But if it were “for as long as you use the internet, you can’t shower”, no, I don’t think I could do that. In practice, that would pretty much be rejecting all in person social contact, and as much as I use the internet, it wouldn’t be worth it.
As far as Sex for a year/My best friend/My spouse, I don’t really have any of those right now, so giving them up isn’t really an issue. Reversing the question, I think I would give up the internet to have them.
My car. I hate driving.
I’m going to go down your list one by one:
Coffee: Sure. I’ll miss it terribly, but I can do it.
Chocolate: See above.
Fast food: No problem - rarely eat it.
My car: No problem - prefer my scooter and there’s great public transportation here.
The right to vote: Nope. Unless it was just for one year.
Showering for a year: NO WAY!
Sex for a year: UGH! Really? One year? Um… of course I could do it. But I would whine about it big time. I wouldn’t like it one bit.
My best friend: Never.
My spouse: I’m not married.
I voted the same thing, for the same reason (and also for the reason that most of the time, I get by fine without a car.)
Voted for fast food; I’ve been gradually cutting that out of my life, anyway. Would not be much of a loss, although I would probably occasionally crave a fast-food burrito.
Coffee and chocolate would be doable, although not easy. The car would be a problem to give up completely; while I can travel most places by walking or bus, there are many situations in which being without a car would be an extreme inconvenience.
There’s no way I would give up voting, showering, sex, or friendship.
