Which of the items listed would be hardest for you to go without for a month?
I’m a huge gamer but even video games pale in comparison to the powah of the internet.
The only reason I got out of bed this afternoon was to check my email.
I’m not depressed or anything. The semester finished yesterday and now I have nothing to do - except to surf the net all day.
I am a gimp, and pretty much housebound except for doctor visits and occasional trips out. My main contact with the rest of the world is via the internet.
I’m thinking your results are going to be a little skewed by the fact that this poll is on a message board…on the internet!
I’m surprised not to see more votes for “car” so far. I voted teh intarwebs myself, but I live incredibly close to large amounts of public transport.
Internet with video games a close second. Would barely miss my cell phone, don’t have a car, and don’t watch much TV.
Yes, people either love the internet or hate it. Some people never get further then email.
Immediately clicked computer and internet. I can walk/use public transport to get wherever I need to. I very rarely use a mobile phone. And I watch all my television on my laptop (either streamed or via dvd).
And my laptop is also my phone, using Skype + Paypal. Now, if only it had wheels and could do 0-60mph in under 6 seconds.
Car. I could stockpile food for a month, but I would have to take a month off of work.
If we have a phone book at home, I don’t know where it is. I use Google for that.
If I have to do any kind of arithmetic- again, Google.
I don’t get any dead-tree newspapers, nor do I watch TV news. I get all my news from the internet. I suppose I could find what channel CNN or the weather channel is if I had to, though.
OTOH, if I didn’t have my cell phone, I don’t think I’d know anybody’s phone number unless I had memorized it back in the day when I didn’t have a cell phone. I don’t bother to memorize phone numbers any more, since they’re in the cell phone.
I couldn’t get to work, or eat without a car.
I voted computer/internet because my job depends on both. Even if I was on vacation for a month, I depend on internet access for reservations, weather reports and other travel info.
I voted for the car because although the loss of the internet would be worse for me emotionally, I can’t get to work without my car and a month without a paycheck would be hard to deal with.
I’d rather lose the car than the internet, but in a practical sense, the loss of my car would be worse. I use the internet for everything, but with no money I can’t pay for the internet.
All of your choices pale in comparison to the dishwasher. I could give up any of them, and it would be only a minor inconvenience. The dishwasher, on the other hand, would force me to do dishes by hand at least once a day, often more, and I can’t think of anything I hate more than doing dishes.
Unfortunately, I need my car to get to work. Without working, I would also lose my cellphone, my internet, etc. If I could get to work without driving, then it would be the internet.
Walkscore describes my neighborhood as car-dependent - there’s really nothing within four miles of here.
However, losing computers would mean I lose my job.
the only odd one out is the car; with a computer, you can call other people, watch tv or play games…
I personally would love to “Misplace” my cell phone! Damned boss and company never give it a rest!
If you ever lose your dishwasher for any amount of time (dishwasher death, power outage), you let me know and I’ll come wash dishes for you while you cook, k?
Deal!
