Thanks for the replies. I am fascinated that the responses ranged from just go into the house to call 911 immediately. To add a little more information-I didn’t get a bad vibe from him but the blocking my driveway and the fact that people don’t usually deliver a hard drive at 2AM was what made me nervous. Since I either had to climb a flight of stairs and unlock the door or open the garage door, go inside, cross the length of the garage and close the door again to get into the house, and he was only about 10 feet away from me, I figured that if he was a rapist/murderer/mugger he would have ample time to get to me if I got out of the car.
As people have pointed out, most serial killers look pretty much like everybody else. While I do know my neighbors well enough to call (I’m just bad at names-I do know her husbands name, though) I also know that they turn their telephone ringer off at night. (Long story short, I came home one night at midnight to find they left their headlights on but couldn’t reach them. I asked why the next morning when they were jumpstarting the car and them told me they turned off the phones so they wouldn’t wake the baby).
I felt bad enough about asking him to move so I would have felt terrible about calling 911. However, I do know that predators use this feeling of not wanting to be a bother or seem paranoid to their advantage. Honestly, I didn’t even think to keep watching him after I went inside. When he agreed to drive around the block right away I figured he was harmless.
I understand. I would feel threatened by any stranger that blocked me in my own driveway at 2 am. No doubt my perceptions have been shaped by my environment. The OP obviously felt threatened otherwise she would not have asked him to circle the block to give her a chance to exit her car enter her home. According to the Seattle PD you should call 911 when “there is a suspicious activity involving a person(s) or vehicle that appears to have criminal intent.” You and I might have different ideas of what appears to be criminal intent I guess.
You have nothing to feel bad about. At best this person was simply clueless but at worst his behavior was rather inconsiderate. You simply do not block someone’s driveway, period. In fact, I bet it’s illegal to do so where you live. You sure as hell don’t box someone into their driveway right after they’ve pulled in and that is doubly true in the dead of night. Calling 911 would have been perfectly reasonable.
That’s your solution to everything.
