What would you like the car manufactures to make for your next car?

Oh, I know what else I want - a car that doesn’t beep unless I’ve actually forgotten something - beep when I leave the lights on or the key in the ignition, but no beeping when the door is open or my seatbelt isn’t on. I know when the door is open, and I wear my seatbelt all the time any way. I don’t need my car nannying me in these ways.

I also want a car that I can lock when it’s running. My 2005 Corolla won’t let me lock it from the outside when the car is running. When it’s parked in my back car pad, and I’m letting it warm up for five minutes when it’s -30 out, I want to lock the damn car and go back inside for a few minutes and use my spare key to unlock it. I can see not locking with the electronic lock, but how about letting me lock it with a key from the outside, because I obviously have a spare key then.

Heated stearing wheel. I think Audi has one, not sure.

I’d also like to see electric defrosters (like the rear window) put on the front down by the windshield wipers. I think this has been done on a few vehicles.

Heck, give me heated windshield wipers too.

A good idea I just came across… The antena for the radio is in my Pathfinders side very rear windows. More wiring sure, but it will make the front window cheaper to replace.

Another good idea… My Pathfinder uses it’s anti-loc brake system to provide 4 wheel limited slip. This seems to be in addition to the VDC, or part of it. But IMHO, it’s a better idea to have ‘posi-traction’ handled by the brakes than the differentials. Seems to work well so far. I’ll know better when I get rid of the crap tires that came with the new vehicle.

You need a Maybach.

Not enough ground clearance. Stupid thing probably doesn’t have any tow hooks either

I want a special “Super Defrost” setting for ALL my windows. I don’t like to stand outside scraping windows in bitter cold, or waiting half an hour for the car to warm up enough to do the job.

And the outside mirrors, too.

A one- liter, two-stroke, three cylinder turbodiesel with desmodromic valvetrain… valves actuated without the need for power-wasting valvesprings…and an
electro-turbo-charger-compounder…take a turbo, add an alternator/motor to the shaft, and wire that to an alternator/motor to the crankshaft. The turbo A/M is capable of extracting up to 25% of the engines net horsepower otherwise lost in the exhaust’s air pressure and returning that power back to the crank via the crank A/M. Also, working backwards, the crank A/M can send juice to the turbo A/M, keeping it spooled up, thus, instant boost at all times.

Add this engine to a hybrid drivetrain with a CVT and all wheel drive.

All I ask is that ALL new cars have adjustable intermittent windshield wipers. Simple. Cheap. Seriously.

Just off the top of my head: Econoline / Astro size van with:

-AC rechargeable hybrid powerplant, with an inverter and AC outlets in the back to power things like small fridges, microwave, laptops, power tools, etc. off the batteries when the engine is off.

-radar / IR see-through dark/fog/rain/snow projeted on a correctly aligned heads-up display on the windshield, allowing you to “see” obstacles in their actual location in poor visibility. I think Cadillac may have something like this already.

-Intelligent AWD that can adjust for either economy, acceleration, steep terrain, towing, deep snow/mud, rain, and ice.

-rear seat that can either fold out into a double bed or be stowed into the floor for more cargo room.

-middle row seats that can be raised into elevated observation bubble turretts in the roof for 360 visibility. Kinda like dorsal turrets on B-17s, minus the machine guns.

-racks on the walls just below the ceiling into which could be inserted 4’x8’ sheets of construction materials like plywood or drywall.

-voice recognition interface for radio/cd, climate control, wipers, & other accessories.

-adjustable /variable ground clearance.

-tires with powered retractable studs.

-variable adjustable tinting in windows, automatic according to sun brightness, but with a manual overide, and a “privacy” setting when the car is parked.

-built-in mp3 player that automaticall rips & stores CDs played .

A big PA system, so I can scream obscenities at other drivers and they hear me, “YEAH, I’M TALKING TO YOU IN THE RED CHEVY, YOU SHITHEAD!”

Spoilsport. (bolding mine)

Preach it!

I loved my '96 Corolla hatch manual (until the ex stole it). Small car, and I got plenty of ribbing from my mates as to how I got my 6’4" frame into it, but I did and did so easily.

It was a car. It did what I told it to. It never broke down, and it only sipped petrol. Handling and performance was more than adequate for my needs, and the manual box was a little joy of a thing.
Oh yes, and being a big bloke in a small car pulls babes… Mr Confidence, innit? hehee… Still, I had a mate who rode a 125cc scooter and he reckons he claimed the prize.

I want the floor mounted dimmer switch back. It’s way easier to use than the thing on the stick, and you’re not going to confuse it with the wipers if you’re in a hurry. LED lighting all the way around, headlights, tail lights, turn signals, and the like. A built-in tool kit, with the factory service manual for the car. You know those neon light tubes people stick under their cars? I want those, in white, mounted in the trunk and the engine compartment, so that if I have to look in either one of them in the dark, I can actually see something. For the interior, I want everything (seats, dash, arm rests) covered in cloth and not plastic or leather. Components that an owner can expect to replace during the car’s lifetime located in easy to reach areas. A padded headliner, not the felt covered cardboard they’re using now in a lot of cars. An onboard diagnostic system that tells me what’s gone wrong in precise, but simple English. Telling me to “Check Engine” is absolutely useless unless the car’s running rough. i have no idea if that means I need to replace the air filter, a vacuum line’s come loose or what.

The Audi R8 has LED lights in the engine bay.

The iteration of the Mercedes Benz G-wagen I’m familiar with will tell you on the dash if you need to add oil, and how much.

I would just like an affordable, easy to maintain, reliable vehicle.

Is that too much to ask for?

Stop laughing, Detroit!

Ok, just bring back the Escort.

This is a brilliant idea. It’s beyond brilliant. It’s fucking brilliant.
I shall now smite you every time I have to scrape off my windows for the next 50 years for putting this thought it there and knowing that Detroit hates its consumers and has no concept of what winter weather is like at all.

I would like a function that when someone is driving and talking on their cell phone there is some kind of automatic thingie that makes the vehicle go over to the shoulder and be undriveable until the yakker is done.

Or, if that is too complicated, I’d like to see an LED in the backwindow that says, " Driver is talking to her mother." Driver is getting yelled at by his wife." " Driver is talking to his girlfriend with his wife on call-waiting." " Driver called 1 900-HotSlut"

But how are you going to do it?

I have automatic climate control in my new Pathfinder. I think I like it, but the jury is still out.

If I set the temp at say 75 degrees, the blower motor will wait until the car starts warming up before it kicks on. Seems like the engine warms up quicker this way.

So, I can start it in the morning go back inside and the blower will come on as soon as it can start feeding heat into the car. It’s a seven speed blower.

They got that right. And, it has rear heat with 5 directable vents in the ceiling.

Heated outside mirrors are pretty common now.

I just want to be able to use the navigation system in our Ford Freestyle when the car is moving. I understand why Ford doesn’t want the driver typing in an address when the car is moving, but why not the passenger? The car’s smart enough to know when someone’s in the passenger seat, because it turns the air bags on and chides the passenger to fasten their seat belt. Why not re-enable the nav system at the same time? I’m sure there’s some hidden dealer demo cheat code to do this, but haven’t found it online yet.

I don’t turn on the defrost until the engine has been warmed up for a minimum of 5 minutes.
Usually I don’t turn anything on until I hit pavement (3 miles away) to ensure the engine is properly warmed and I don’t blast myself with freezing air.
