I sprang for a Kindle daily deal and am enjoying The Unquiet Bones by Mel Starr. It’s sort of a medieval CSI. A young surgeon is asked by the local lord to investigate a murder. The Amazon review praises the “realistic medical procedures, droll medieval wit, romantic distractions, and a consistent sense of Christian compassion.”
ETA: Off to Amazon to pre-order Joe Hill’s new book.
So, I finished Gone Girl. Oof. That was…weird. I don’t know who to feel sorry for, or whether it ended exactly as it should’ve. Huh. I think that one’s going to have me thinking about it for a while.
I liked Gone Girl but liked Dark Places better. Haven’t read Sharp Objects yet but plan to. I want to call Flynn’s novels “potboilers” but I think they’re better than that. Is “potboiler” always negative?
Ian D. Bergkamp, Amazon’s not showing an upcoming novel from Joe Hill. You have some inside info?
Here’s a post from him on his blog about it, with a video link there to some additional discussion. Short answer is that it’s called NOS4A2 and “won’t be out until April of 2013 at the earliest.” So there’s a bit of a wait. Apologies if “upcoming” was misleading.
What about picking up an old favorite? I’ve been re-reading classic short stories: Saki and Ray Bradbury. Started this while walking around SF with only a book in my back pocket.
Oh, and I just posted this in the “Do people look at you askance because you like to read books?” thread:
My go-to “Recharge Myself” activity is sitting in a tiny little coffee joint (out of the way-- important that no one knows I’m there, and no one I know is going to walk in).
With a stack of kids’ books. I just started teaching a tough semester, so this afternoon it’s some comic books and an old copy of The Missing Chums (I gotta find out if they’ll get rescued by Joe and Frank Hardy).
