Whatever Happened to Michael, King of Romania (exiled)?

I’m currently reading a book that has a few pages devoted to exiled, deposed, and otherwise de-throned European monarchs. The book, written in 1981, mentions the strange case of Michael, King of Romania, exiled in the 1940’s or 1950’s (the book is out in my car).

As the book was written, Michael was living near poverty in some small town in Switzerland, lamenting “It’s hard for a king to find a job.” The book also mentioned that Michael’s father had left millions in some Swiss bank account, and that Michael is the rightful heir, but that he cannot claim the money because he doesn’t know the password. So, he shows up at the bank every few months, reciting lists of random words, and hoping for the best. Remember, this was in 1981.

If this poor fellow is still alive today, he would be 81, and I would hope that, since publication of the book, he would have reclaimed his money and be living his twilight years in dignity. Alas, is this too much to hope for?

Does anyone know what has happened to Michael, King of Romania, since 1981? Did he ever get his money? Is he still alive?

TIA
