What's a cell phone waiting area at an airport?

Or anywhere, for that matter…

At the Portland, Oregon International Airport, alongside the frontage road at the cargo area, and along the south runway, there is a little parking lot labeled “Cell Phone Waiting Area.” Lots of red signs point the way to the lot.

What is this? I’ve never seen it there before.

Thanks!

It’s just an area for people to park and wait in their cars for the passengers they are picking up to call. Like this one at Dulles International Airport.

I believe the idea is to keep cars out of the passenger pickup area until the passenger truly is ready for pickup.

The idea originated to keep traffic around the terminal to a minimum. If you are picking someone up, you go park in that lot until they get their luggage and call you. You then slid in, pick them up, and slide right out again. In theory.

Just to add, and Midway airport they have a ‘Kiss and Ride’ area, which I took to mean kiss your loved ones good by and get the f out of here.

Perhaps it’s more common but that’s the 1st time I saw that, but not enough to open a new thread over.

WAG Where the cell phones wait…?

I’d love to see one at Logan. Nothing worse than picking someone up there… You have to park off property or face the wrath of the Staties that send you around the loop if you even pause for traffic!
