What's a good anonymous web proxy server/service?

What is a reliable and secure anonymous web proxy in order to conceal my IP address for certain online activities? (Nothing illegal y’understand, just things I wouldn’t want to be misunderstood if they come out during my senate campaign).

The internet is rife with lists of anonymous proxies, but it seems like each and every one I tried was nonresponsive. I downloaded a trial of a package, liked it, the trial expired, I was willing to pay the $20 for it… and then they wanted my credit card name and billing address, etc. And they have the nerve to call their product “Anonymizer”! :smack:

So what servers/services out there can make me reasonably anonymous?

This one was recommended by Kim Komando.

You could always see if they’ll accept something like a Visa gift card. The card works basically like a credit card, but you can enter any name/address you want, has a pre-set limit, and is not attached to you. (https://www.allaccessgift.com/)

Otherwise, this site: http://www.samair.ru/ contains a list of free proxies, but many of them weren’t intended to be used as proxies(some webmaster forgot to close a port), so they’ll often go down randomly, and some may log access.

There are several programs floating around that are configured to work with a specific proxy server/servers, tor is one, Anonymizer is another…I’m not too familiar with them, since I usually only use proxies to disguise my location. (sockscap/browser proxy settings are all I really need for that)

Who is Kim Komando? She looks like my mom, why should I think she isn’t working for The Man?

I have an informal background in security and anonymity and can vouch for TOR.

With your level of paranoia regarding credit cards and anonymous proxies turning you in (which they all will if you do something illegal enough), you’re better off going to an internet cafe in disguise. BTW, xiix is a double agent. Is your mom single? Kim Komando ain’t half bad for us older guys.

I installed Tor… it looks promising, but upon install, total strikeout. It doesn’t seem to run straight out of the box, but darned if I know what I need to do. The link to the support forum took me to a bug tracker program (no, not going to enter a bug for what is likely a problem between the me and the docs. Any idea where I can get some useful help?

FYI, there core problem seems to be:

  1. Try to start Tor. I get a message that it can’t connect to localhost:9051
  2. Then I get this in the log
Apr 21 22:45:20:781 [Notice] I learned some more directory information, but not enough to build a circuit.
  3. Can’t surf at all unless I click “tor disabled” in the Firefox tor button plugin. (presumably because tor not working).

Deleted… wrong thread.
