What's a good mixer with tequila?

What do you like to mix with tequila? I have some I’d like to consume, but I don’t like it straight and I don’t feel like making margaritas. What’s a simple 1 or 2 ingredient tequila drink?

I like it with Sprite

Tequila sunrise. 1:2 ratio tequila and orange juice in an ice filled glass. Then pour some grenadine down the back of a spoon so it floats. Look at the pretty drink, then stir and drink.

Really, though, tequila should be drunk straight. Just sip out of a shot glass.

My preferences, in descending order:

Straight
Squeeze of lime
Margaritas, real ones, none of that icky margarita mix or ice

Anything else is just too damned sweet.

Saliva.

I like tequila with grapefruit juice. Unfortunately, GFJ and my high blood pressure meds do not mix well, so I can’t indulge in this particular mixture. :frowning:

*Short answer? *

A lick of salt lodged in the “king’s snuffbox” on your wrist and the juice from a bitten wedge of lime.

Long Answer?

There is a specific reason for the old tequila, salt and lime wedge routine.

Your palate has distinct taste oriented regions (we’ll disregard umame for the nonce). Let’s review them;

Tequila = Bitter

Salt = Erm … Salty

Lime = Sour

The one single set of unsaturated nerve endings amongst your (now thoroughly assaulted) taste buds is …

Unmangled Taste Bud Category = Sweet

Your palate perceives a mildly sweet aftertaste from the traditionally consumed trio.

Preferred Mixer = Beer Chaser (i.e., Modelo Especial)

I find there is little reason to drink tequila unless it is consumed in its traditional format. Gold tequilas can have a really nasty aftertaste. White tequilas (i.e., Herradura Blue Agave) are so excellent that mixing them is a crime. Añejos are rarely worth the price, especially when compared to a good classic tequila like Sausa Commemorativo.

Tequila + Grapefruit soda + a squeeze of lime + a dash of salt into the glass = Palomita. Mmmm

If you like bloody marys, you might also like Sangrita, the mix for which you might find at a liquor store or Mexican grocery. Typical brand is Viuda de Sanchez.

A tequila slammer is simple and entertaining. Pour equal parts tequila and lemon-lime soda into a large sturdy shot glass. Cover the mouth of the glass with your hand, then lift it a few inches off the bar and slam it down. It will fizz like crazy. Swig it and pretend you’re Chow Yun-Fat.

A friend told me of a much deadlier variant which involves replacing the soda with sparkling wine. He said it was guaranteed to knock you out faster than anything else. I took his word for it.

Me. I mix very well with tequila. Send me your tequila and I will show you. It’s a strange and wonderful thing.

Since that’s not going to happen, try a Blue Maragarita. It’s just a substitution of Curacao for Triple Sec, but blue drinks are way more fun.

I was going to suggest the palomita mentioned by El Mariachi. But I’ve never seen grapefruit-flavored soda in the U.S.

Squirt is grapefruit-flavored soda.

Not a mixer, but this is the Tequila shot-of-choice in Prague for the past few years:

Orange slice sprinkled with ground cinnamon
Shot of Tequila

One before the other depending on your preference. But the orange and cinnamon go great with Tequila! Try it the next time you are out, you won’t be disappointed.
