Rats in The Amazing Maurice urinate as a form of communication. The message might be “piss on YOU” or “you puny humans can’t stop a rat from going where he wants”, but it’s a communication method. I think that the exact word used is wee or widdle, which should appeal to some of the younger kids.
Alan Garner’s Elidor is a great read for youngsters - although it has a few scenes of total heart-stopping horror. Perfect in other words. What about The Hobbit?
The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full Of Sky, Wintersmith and I Shall Wear Midnight!! I’ve read most of Terry Pratchetts discworld, and these are my favourites by far! Also audio additions, narrated by Tony Robinson are widely available! Although I will warn you, it they left me wanting more!! Very addictive!!! X
Doodlebug, if I understand correctly, the audio editions read by Tony Robinson are all abridged—which may be why you were left wanting more. There are unabridged editions read by Stephen Briggs. (He also reads the unabridged editions of Pratchett’s later “adult” Discworld books; most of the earlier ones were done by Nigel Planer.)
Zombie thread, folks. Take note.
I don’t knoe if the OP is still wanting suggestions, or if Pratchett type humour/ fantasy are required. I’ll just say that when I a teenager there were two particular authors I was very fond of.
John Christopher. Wrote a lot of post-apocalyptic fiction, for various ages. Some for young children, some for teenagers, and some for adults. As a teenager I liked :
- The Prince In Waiting (trilogy)
- The Tripods (trilogy)
- Empty World.
- Fireball (trilogy, although I read only the first two)
- The Lotus Caves.
Robert Westall, wrote a lot of supernatural fiction, occasional science fiction, and some straight fiction. AS a teenager I liked:
- The Machine Gunners, and its sequel *Fathom Five * ((Children in England during World War 2, no supernatural or science fiction content)
- The Wind Eye
- The Watch House
- The Scarecrows (his best)
- The Devil on the Road (second best)
- Break of Dark
- Futuretrack Five (note - some sexual content, not recommended for under 16s)
- Blitzcat
- Urn Burial
