In a math class the other day, the subject of Euler’s totient function came up. The professor remarked that he had no idea what the word totient means, and neither do I. I can’t find it in a dictionary, and a web search for “totient” returns a bunch of websites about the Euler totient function. Anbody know what it means?
From Chambers:
Totient–the number of totitives in a number.
Totitive–a number less than a number and prime to it.
Wow, thanks.
So did Euler (or one of his contemporaries) just invent the word?
