So I’m going to my brother-in-law’s wedding in 2 weeks at a beachside resort at Key Largo and the dress is described as “Beach Casual”. The males in the wedding party will be in pink polos and khakis (which I am not in, but am still male.)
Would Beach Casual include a tasteful Hawaiian shirt? I have one that’s understated and well-made. I have khakis, too, and frankly the dark green and white of my shirt matches it more than the pink polos do!
Also, now is the time when I wish I had accepted said brother-in-law’s fiance’s offer to get me Crocs for a gift, as she and her family are total Croc-heads and there will probably be several people rocking dressier Crocs so I would know I could wear that as footwear. I am not sure how much sand will be involved in the actual wedding or I’d feel comfortable in dress shoes. (Actually, unless I hear differently I will wear my dark green and white Hawaiian shirt, khakis and dress shoes. I don’t want to spend any superfluos money where I don’t have to, unlike my other brother’s wedding last fall where I bought an entirely new dress suit but I can wear that on interviews.)
A tasteful Hawaiian shirt and khakis would be fine for the wedding that’s being described. Though the wedding that’s being described is not what I’d think of in terms of ‘beach casual’ – beach casual in my mind is shorts and swim trunks – things that are generally banned from the dining rooms of cruise ships and resorts. What they’re asking for is more along the lines of ‘resort casual’ – actual clothing, but summery and casual.
A Hawaiian shirt & khakis are exactly what you should wear to this kind of event, I should think. I would nix the Crocs, though, in favor of a nicer sandal or even a flip-flop.
My sister had a beach wedding and there was a pretty good range of what people wore. My brother-in-law wore a very nice silk floral print shirt, my sister wore a modified wedding gown. The pastor wore a print shirt and shorts. We mostly work shorts, sandals and floral printed shirts, ladies wore sundresses or shorts and shirts. It was April in the evening, so I don’t think anyone went swimming (Indian Rocks Beach, FL).
Just wear whatever you are comfortable in, but not something that is clean and at least new-ish.
Was definitely a blast of a wedding, very relaxed, lots of tropical drinks, and we had a hotel room down the beach. Have a great time.
I saw a guy at a medical conference last fall in a suit, tie, and black Crocs without socks. An early adopter, I guess.
Mark me down as someone who hears “beach casual” and thinks “bathing suit, maybe.” Is there any way you can arrange to arrive at the wedding by running down the beach on a white horse?
