What’s different about the “Control Panel” folder? How can I add and edit icon names?
I have a program called Xteq that somehow got into my Control Panel “folder”, which is OK, but now I can’t change its name to something I associate with it.
I’d like it to be called Tweak-Xteq so it will remind me what it does, and so it will be right next to TweakUI.
Is there any way to do this? I can’t find an actual folder.
On Windows Explorer, the Control Panel looks like an extra drive after E:(CD-Rom) on the tree.
Also, I have another “tweaker”, ItweakU that’s just in the regular porgram list. I’d like them all together, so I can find them all when I’m touching up something like the mouse, that they all have parameters for.
Control Panel applications are designated by the extension .cpl and usually, the ones in your control panel correspond to .cpl files in your system directory.
They may also be registered under the MMCPL key of HKEY_CURRENT_USER in the registery. This will be done only if the program in question requires special DLL’s that the vendor did not wish to install in the system directory.
.cpl’s are actually just special-purpose DLL’s which implement a standard entry point allowing them to interact with the control panel.
Unfortunately, for your purposes, that standard entry point defines the icon, title, etc. It’s not really intended that you be able to use the control panel as you would a normal program folder. You CAN add / remove .cpl’s, but you shouldn’t mess around too much - it will just confuse the issue when talking to support people who expect the standard stuff to be there.
You CAN create shortcuts to control panel items, so you could create your own “control-panel” folder containing shortcuts to all the control panel items, and you could name them whatever you liked.
