What's fun in Chicago?

Hey! I need some help.

Baby sis just turned 21; she and middle sis and I want to go out this Wednesday (pre-Thanksgiving) night in Chicago. I haven’t lived in IL for two years, so what can three gals do for fun?

No, we will not come to your house.

Thanks!

Well, it is too late in the year to go to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs lose.

…much to the chagrin of Wrigleyville bar owners, I’m sure! Truly, the Cubs ought to play all year. They sure could use the practice…

Hey not-so-beefymeg, how the hell are ya.

Depends on what your scene is like. Do you have a prefered neighborhood? Are you coming in from the burbs?

I’d suggest John Barleycorn in Wrigleyville on a weekend night. Its got the laid back downstairs, decent food, and the dance floor upstairs. Little of everything. It definately can be a little yuppie-ish, but unless you’re into the edgier club scene its a good time.

What kind of trouble are you girls looking for?

Here’s a lot of previous info on the subject, though not necessarily dedicated to nightlife:

I’d personally recommend one of the larger clubs for three hot chicks new to the scene: Crobar, Circus, Zentra, Smart Bar, Karma, Excalibur…

Wanna do retro and dance to 70s music? Polly Esters.

If you want to hop around a bit, and don’t mind having drunk frat boys spill beer on you all night, go to Division and Deerborn and take your pick.

Want something with a little more class, and lot more expensive? The Signature Room on the 96th floor of the Hancock, or Ghost Bar.

If you want a smaller “bar” type place with a nice atmosphere, and to perhaps run into yours truly, try Estelles at North and Damen.

Everything’s gonna be crowded as hell. The day before Thanksgiving is always the busiest bar night of the year.

Pippin’s on Rush by Loyola.

Good GOD, Omni, it’s been a long time! I’m great. You?

Ok, I’ll be more specific.

  1. We’d like to hit a bar. Or two.

  2. We’re coming in from the NW burbs, so we’re not going south of the Eisenhower. Wrigleyville is ok.

  3. Real music please! (Though not necessarily live.) I can’t tolerate rap or clubby-type thumping music or whatever the heck is so popular now. I want to be able to sing along with whatever is playing. (That would, I believe, eliminate Excalibur and Crobar?)

  4. Specifically, if anybody knew of any great local bands that were playing, that would be a big help. Or happy neighborhood bars. Barleycorn is probably a good option. Mostly I want to avoid your typical “club.” However, having drunk frat boys spill beer on us would proabbly be quite pleasant.

Gracias.

Barleycorn has gotten pretty clubby lately, just FYI. How about the Double Door in Wicker Park? Or the Empty Bottle? They usually have great live acts.

The Empty Bottle on Lincoln is a good place for music. So is Beat Kitchen on Belmont.

Oh, also the Note in Wicker Park. If you like jazz, there’s the Green Mill on Broadway, but it’s a bit northy – if you’re hoping to bar-hop then it’s a little out of the way.

Hey girl, sorry for the delayed reply, I took off for my Thanksgiving Holiday to visit un-interneted family for the weekend just after posting here.

I’m doing pretty good, unemployed and broke, but otherwise damn good.

Where’d you end up moving to (back from), and how come? Chicago is a lesser place without you.

So how did the event turn out? Any fun stories to share with the group?
