Last Friday I had the second and I hope last part of a root canal.
The are was sore and still sensitive to pressure so I have been eating on the other side, though I have been brushing/flossing/water-piking everywhere without incident.
Just now while flossing I noticed some gum pain near the tooth while flossing. This is new. I looked in the mirror and there’s a red spot on the gums–it doesn’t appear to be bleeding and the floss didn’t come away red but it looks like blood.
If I’m not mistaken, this was more or less the same spot where the guy gave me additional anaesthetic as he was performing the last part (filling the roots).
What am I seeing? Is this an abscess? I have a regular dentist appointment scheduled in two days, can I wait until then?
Maybe, but it seems a bit large for that and why would the soreness take three days to show up there? I have been having other aches from the procedure but this is new.
You could have extra root in there and it can abcess! You will probably be okay til thursday or friday. Abcesses are the absolute worst pain in the world! You will know if it happens. Are you on antibiotics?
Dentist here. Could be an injection site, a draining sinus tract(where an abscess drains) is a possibility also something like a herpetic lesion(stress can cause outbreaks). If you are tolerating it I’d wait till the regular appointment. Call them right away if you get swelling, fever or pain not controlled with OTC meds.
Usually root canals are done in one and sometimes two appointments. Most of the time a sinus tract will be there prior to the treatment not form after it.
