What's Good on Netflix?

The next season of Death in Paradise just got released. We’re watching a show a day, which is binging for us.

And I second Detectorists and Miss Fisher. And of course the MST3K reboot.

Seconded!

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! Black Mirror, Stranger Things, Castlevania, The Detectorists, Sense8, and a whole bunch more are on my list. As for The Last Kingdom, I think I like Uhtred already.

Are there any competition-types shows in the vein of The Great British Bake-Off or Project Runway on? I prefer ones without a lot of scheming and mean comments. Mostly just folks who are doing their best under unrealistic time constraints.

I wanted to mention Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. They’re good fun and aren’t airing on our PBS stations right now so I’ll probably check those out, too. I didn’t realize there were so few seasons. And “Death In Paradise” is good, too. For some reason, our PBS station isn’t airing the ones with Police Chief Poole in them, so I’d like to see those.

Now, I have a suggestion for you all. If you’re into somewhat dark, dystopian but well-acted and visually interesting fantasy, try “Tinman.” It’s set in the Land of Oz (called the O.Z. here) some time after Dorothy left it and things have gone to the worse. Zooey Deschanel plays the main character. When this originally aired on the Sci-Fi Channel about ten years ago, this was my first experience with her acting. I bet they rerun it occasionally or it may still be on Netflix, as it was the last time I petsat. I sure hope it is.
Again, thanks to you all for your suggestions. I very much appreciate it. This will make the days more interesting while I’m petsitting, since I don’t drive and there is no longer a bus route near their house.

Looks like Netflix only has episode one. Acorn has all seasons at 5$/month subscription.

Netflix has two seasons of Detectorists

A few months ago I watched a docu-drama miniseries called Wormwood, about the CIA’s “MKUltra” mind control project, and specifically Frank Olson, who supposedly committed suicide during the program, or did he? Extremely in-depth, with dramatized scenes alternated with excerpts from an extended interview with one of Olson’s sons. Completely one-sided storytelling of course, but a fascinating story anyways.

Curious and Unusual Deaths.

Command and Control – story of the 1980 Titan missile explosion in Damascus Arkansas.

Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist – investigation of the “pizza bomber” case with lots of twists and turns.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World

History of the Eagles (unless you hate the frigging Eagles, man)

My Scientology Movie – Louis Theroux and former senior exec Mark Rathbun cast actors to reenact various encounters with David Miscavige . Unsurprisingly, they get hassled by church members at almost every turn.

Speaking of rock music documentaries: The Wrecking Crew! and Muscle Shoals.

Watching the first season now. Man, that one driver Steve just can’t catch a break with all those mudholes, what a nightmare.

Wait until you get to the salvage guy who bodged up a mobile car crusher and takes a muddy shortcut. Season 3, I think.

Netflix has a category called “Award-Winning Movies” with lots of good stuff.

I also recommend Miss Fisher as well as GLOW. Also HER with Joachim Phoenix.

Also The New Legends of Monkey.

I enjoyed the 8 episode series The Rain. Post-bio-apocalypse story set in Denmark plus I liked the music.

lost in space reboot was solid.Started slow, but got better as it went along

love Luce cage
Jessica Jones
Iron fist
Daredevil
The punisher
Clone wars is good
There are a number of ghost in the shell animated movies

If you’re interested in British sitcoms, they also have the original version of “The Office” with Ricky Gervais, and I would also recommend “The IT Crowd” with Chris O’Dowd and Richard Ayoade, about a couple of guys who work in corporate IT.

Spoilers for How It Ends-

Don’t waste your time.

The Netflix remake of Lost in Space was a fun Sci Go adventure.

I’ll second that opinion. A movie that goes nowhere, badly.

Not sure they are on your version of Netflix, but if you’re enoying Miss Fisher you may also like:

Jack Irish - couple of telemovies and several short-run series. Guy Pearce + crime - you cant go wrong

Summerheights High, We can be Heroes - two brilliant comedy series

Muriel’s Wedding - Australia’s national movie.

I saw that when it was in the theaters. It was really good. (And a minor nitpick. The main character’s motivation wasn’t to escape his dreary life, but to impress girls. That, of course, is the motivation of most pop and rock musicians ever.) And, by the way, the writer/director is best known for Once, from about ten years ago.
