What's happened to On/Off switches?

Back in the day, electronics came with honest to goodness on/off switches. If you moved the switch one way, it turned on. Move it back the other way and it turned off. For some reason designers decided that this solution was inadequate. Now, we have these abominations where you just have a button. Press to turn on, and press and hold to turn off. The problem is that it just doesn’t seem to work that well for me. I don’t know if my finger is too big, or if it slips or what, but it takes me more effort than it really should to turn something off or on. I wish they would bring back the on/off switch.

Anyone else with me?

Toggle switches lends themselves to actual disconnection of power, when electronics without them are turned “off,” you’re actually putting it in a sleep/power-save mode. Those same on/off buttons could easily be designed bigger or with a higher degree of tactile-feedback, but the damn things are usually very small.

At least you don’t need to worry about different orientations.
In the UK, down=on, up=off for wall switches, while in the US up=on, down=off.

I don’t know if toggle switches on electronics follow the down=on standard in the UK.
