I know that last spring, Utah was all set to reject federal education money in order to avoid the requirements of No Child Left Behind. Perusing the Utah DoE website, I’m having trouble finding out what ever came of that. Does anyone know?
My reading of some articles in the Utah papers over the last few months suggests that it’s status quo right now. Both sides are still negotiating. I’ll try to find a better answer later tonight.
The crux of Utah’s argument against the No Child Left Behind legislation comes down to two major sticking points.

[li]The state and local school administrators are better qualified to determine programs that work for their area rather than “one size fits all” Federal programs[/li][li]The cost to implement and administer NCLB exceeds the Federal education dollars provided to the state. Money that could have been used for other worthwhile projects must be diverted to meet this Federal mandate. [/li][/ul]
