I was gonna chime in, and say that the theater my mother used to work for (and her boyfriend still does) uses (or at least used) clarified butter.
I keep meaning to buy some, for popcorn at home.
Movie popcorn tastes good, but it always makes me sick. Something about the fake butter, because popcorn at home never makes me puke.
My mom and I always sneak in our own snacks. Screw paying that much for junk food - we put a bottle of water and a bag of fruit snacks or something in our purses.
Yeah, some decent theatres use real butter. The Bloor Cinema in Toronto does (or did when I lived there), which is one of the many reasons why it was my favourite theatre. (Others include the fact that it showed really interesting films, and that it had a balcony.)
