My SO just accepted a job offer in Las Vegas and they want him to start in 30 days. We’re going this weekend to look for a house to rent in the Summerlin area.
Any dopers live there that can offer any advice on things as what areas to avoid etc?
This is the first out of state move we’ve made together and we’re a little nervous so any advice would be helpful
My cousin used to live in Vegas (husband, two kids). They actually lived in Henderson, and it was very nice. If you didn’t drive over to the Strip, you wouldn’t know you were in Las Vegas.
Except for the slot machines in the supermarket, pharmacy and video store, of course.
My girlfriend has been there for over 20 years and she loves it. It’s very hot in the summer, but it’s a boom town, so there’s lots of work. I’d do it in a heartbeat!
Hi,
I have lived in or near Vegas (born and grew up 20 miles away in Boulder City, lived in Vegas for the last 4 years) all of my life. Las Vegas is a pretty cool place to live- there is always something to do, we have great restaurants and lots of entertainment opportunities. We are close to snow skiing in the winter, lake sports in the summer, lots of camping within 3-6 hours drive. Summerlin is probably one of the most upscale parts of the valley- for us natives its a mixed blessing- the money coming into town is great but Las Vegas is losing alot of its own personality in favor of yuppie culture. Summerlin is also very near Red Rock Recreational Area, which is awesome (another bone of contention with the yuppies- they take the best looking part of the valley and decide to screw it up by building houses within a stone’s throw of Red Rock. ) Job market is good- too good for employees- as a manager we have a hell of a time finding decent workers.
It is very, very hot here. Miserably hot. A/C in your car is a neccesity. But even though its hot- everywhere has A/C and you just wait until nighttime to go outside and do stuff. The great, mild winters (unless its windy) make up for the summers ten-fold. I do love living in Vegas, although I would like to live somewhere greener someday.
I have lived in Las Vegas, well Henderson really, for the last 8 years. I like it, even though it does get mighty toasty here in the summer. The winters are mild and enjoyable.
Summerlin is a nice area, expensive, but nice. I have no idea what rental homes anywhere in town go for these days. I assume $1000+ a month would be a minimum. What part of town you would want to live in would also depend on what part of town your SO & you will be working in and how much time do you want to spend commuting everyday.
