What's it worth?

One of our local casinos is having some sort of a contest. The winner has her/his choice of prize: either a 2002 Ford Thunderbird or a ton of nickels. This got me wondering - I can easily find out the MSRP for the car, but, just how much money are we talking about for the ton of nickels?

Would the winner be better off (given taxes, license, registration, today’s high price for gasoline, etc.) in going for the change rather than the 'bird?

1 nickel = 5 grams

1 ton = ~909 Kilograms

200 nickels per Kilogram

$10 of nickels per Kilogram

$9,090.00 per ton of nickels

Go for the T’bird.

Thanks, Zenster!

The radio ad for the contest makes that ton of nickels seem to be worth as much as the T’bird.

I really think that matching the value of the car, dollar for dollar (or, nickel for nickel), would be a little more sporting. But, I’m not in charge (again)
