What's New in New Orleans?

I’ve been to New Orleans many times, but not since 2005 (just before Katrina). I’m heading back there in a few weeks. What’s new? New restaurants, new museums, new cultural things to visit? I’ll be staying in the French Quarter.*

Thanks!

(*Someday I’ll have to visit the other three quarters.)

We’ll be there next weekend for a convention. I’ll ask my husband what’s new since last time he was there.

You’ve never been to the Garden District? Irish Channel? Marigny?

It was a joke.

I was there last year. Hanging out with some locals, they seemed to think that the city has been dying, as a real city, since Katrina. Sort of like how Venice has turned into a tourist attraction rather than a real city. By that I mean less liveable & less residents but with more bars and stuff to keep the visitors happy.

The club scene on Frenchmen Street has exploded. You’ll find better music there than on Bourbon Street. Louisiana Music Factory has moved there.

The restaurant Cochon opened shortly after Katrina. It and its sister restaurant, Cochon Butcher, are highly regarded and very popular. In my opinion, Cochon Butcher makes the best muffuletta in town.

I was very impressed with Borgne the last time I visited New Orleans. I had a dish of oyster spaghetti that was one of the best things I’d ever eaten in that city, which is saying a lot. They currently have angel hair pasta with a choice of seafood, which looks very similar.

Blaine Kern’s Mardi Gras World has moved from Algiers to near the convention center, which makes it easier to get to. Yeah, it’s touristy, but I like it.

Another thing: the D-Day Museum has become the World War II Museum.

I was in New Orleans in July for the grand total of one time. I’m still traumatized from the heat and humidity that I had to endure. :frowning:

My last trip was in mid-August. I’m hoping early July is slightly less brutal!
