What's so great about "The Princess Bride"?

That’s clearly wuv, twue wuv.

It’s great because of its many great lines, of which, IMHO, the greatest is:

“I’m not left-handed either.”

Great story! But may I correct your spelling of that M word? It’s… MAWEED.

Mawidge. Mawidge is wot bwings us togeder… today.

And @digs, I’m absolutely certain you haven’t heard this before.

I’m surprised I haven’t seen more memes made from that scene lately.

“Why are you wearing a mask?”
“They’re very comfortable. I predict that in the future, everyone will wear one.”

Definitely don’t watch it. This kind of information can only be obtained by having other people explain the movie to you.

Fezzik, tear his arms off.

Ted Cruz thinks Hollywood should stay out of politics? Someone ought to tell the guy who spent 20 minutes arguing with an empty chair at the 2016 RNC.

Someone should point out that the First Amendment applies to everyone. Actors and worthless politicians.

I skimmed the thread, so I don’t know if the OP ever ended up seeing the movie, but I’m actually hoping they didn’t. Sometime when someone sees a movie after it’s been praised to the heavens by everyone, they come out of seeing it saying, “That’s it? It wasn’t that great.” Lately I’ve tried not to overpraise anything.

(And BTW, for anyone who did like The Princess Bride, I recommend watching Stardust, based on a Neil Gaiman story. It has some of the same sensibility.)

OP here. Thank you email notifications I forgot I had for alerting me to this. (And apologies to all Dopers for being away from the boards for about a decade or so. How is everyone, is Obama still president?)

As to Dewey’s comment, I’ll spare you the wondering: I have seen Princess Bride, initially more out of curiosity than anything. And at that moment it became my favourite movie and I understand why it’s beloved the world over. (Well, favourite tied with Airplane!). So yeah there’s that.

(And saw the news about the cast reading the book and am so disappointed that as a non-American I can’t partake in this!)

I’m glad you liked the movie.

And feel free to pop over to the States next Sunday night. I think there’s a special "Princess Bride/Lebowski"* visa you can get.

*That’s playing at our small town drive-in… oops, just checked their geocities-era website, and it’ll be Men In Black & Ghostbusters next weekend.

That line is one I think of as well. I’d like to say it to the guy who killed my father.

I’ve mentioned this here before, but I was part of a group heading down to NOLA after Katrina, and we “camped” over a Saturday night in a church basement in Tennesee. The service the next morning was “Nametag Sunday!!!” and since they were printed with a big “MY NAME IS…” I was, of course Inigo Montoya.

No one remarked on it…

For Halloween, I usually get trick-or-treaters wearing a “Hello My Name Is” sticker with either “Inigo Montoya” or “Ishmael” sharpied in.

FWIW, the system says it’s been five years, but in any event, welcome back, dhk! And no, alas, Obama doesn’t live in the White House anymore.

Mild bump again. I just came across one of my favorite quotes from Inigo Montoya.

No, not that Inigo Montoya quote. This one, where he screams for help from Fezzik to help him break down the locked door that The Six-Fingered Man just escaped through. I love how Inigo screams to Fezzik, “He’s getting away from me. Fezzik, PLEEEEASE!”

You killed my father... - YouTube < YouTube, approx 30secs
