whats the abbreviation for "such as?"

I know these:
[ul]
[li]e.g. = for example[/li]
[li]i.e. = that is[/li]
[li]et al = and others[/li]
[li]etc. = etcetera[/li]
[li]misc. = miscellaneous[/li][/ul]

Is there an abbreviation for the phrase “such as?”

I hope so, because I was almost certain there is one.

I looked here but it came up with nothing. :confused:

Is there a difference between “such as” and “for example”?

I had wondered the exact same thing.

There is no difference in meaning, although perhaps in usage:
[ul][li]The SDMB has many forums, such as General Questions and Great Debates.[/li]The SDMB has many forums; for example, General Questions and Great Debates.[/ul]The examples you listed have abbreviations courtesy of their long usage (obviously they have Latin origins). The expression “such as” has not enjoyed the same time-worn popularity and as a consequence has no common abbreviation.

I’ve seen viz. used for that …

Quick check at dictionary.com (sorry, I left my OED in my other pants :D) :

vi·del·i·cet
adv. Abbr. viz.
That is; namely. Used to introduce examples, lists, or items.

there is a thread floating around in the cyber-darkness of the SDMB wherein members more learned than I posted “all” the abbreviations of this sort. I printed out some of them for my own purposes. If it can’t be found, I’ll post them for you.

The MLA handbook offers MANY accepted abbreviations. (but not one for “such as”)

American Heritage dictionary says:

Similar things or people; the like: pins, needles, and such. --idiom. such as.

Can you give us some more hints so we can search for it ourselves, or could you post it again?

Thanks!
