What's the appeal of Monty Python? How to market it to women?

I have read at least one article that says the same thing (not about Python specifically, but about how men and women appreciate different kinds of humor). But it’s good to read it from someone who is qualified to talk out of his ass on the Internet and make up shit that’s completely wrong. Next time this topic comes up, you’re my cite.

Testicles.

I once dressed up like a lady, and I love MP!

When you’re there, offer rockle Dairy Queen for dessert. It’ll seal the deal.

For what it’s worth, my family started watching Monty Python on PBS in the mid 70’s–to be exact I, my mom and my two sisters were religious followers of the show while my dad was at best lukewarmly tolerant of the whole thing and could NOT understand why we were busting up so hard. I think he watched it for the occasional naked boobie, truth be told. So, four out of five in our family, all female, total Python freaks. The one holdout was the single male.

I’ve been known to sing “Sit On My Face” in fairly operatic tones across any acoustically favorable space I encounter–it’s one of my favorite songs to use as a warmup for my vocal chords. I’ll quote reams of material from the TV shows and movies at the drop of a hat and have “Monty Python Sings” in my CD folder in the car at all times.

Unlike the Stooges, I don’t think MP is gender polarized enough to make a general case.

And I’ll cite you. That’ll make the bullshit twice as convincing!

Oh, sure, but only if your idea of “sealing the deal” means visiting the World Famous State Street Tavern with so-called “ice cream” down your pants. Ahem. Although, loath as I am to admit it, I do kinda dig those DQ ice cream cones that are dipped in that chocolately Magic-Shell-type stuff. They’re pretty OK.

Woman here. I think the Stooges are hilarious and so do most women I know. I simply don’t get the position that there is a separate set of giggle genes for women than men.

And what’s with people prefacing statements that “I’m a geek and…” ? What does that have to do with a sense of humor and why would someone degrade themselves like that before making a statement? Just wondering…sorry for the hijack.

Degrade? It’s a badge of honor! Someday I hope to have my own float in the Geek Pride Parade.

It’s also a useful term because there is a lot of typical “geek” humor. Python, Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, stuff like that.

geek ( P ) Pronunciation Key (gk)
n. Slang

A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy.
A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

I dunno…sounds degrading to me. None of you people sound like geeks to me.

Geek* has evolved in common meaning. Many of us social misfits, Art Geeks, Band Geeks, Computer Geeks, D&D/RPG Geeks, Science Geeks, Comic Book Guys, Engineers etc. now wear the term Geek as a badge of Honor.
I have actually seen younger Geeks (okay Nerds*) wearing shirts that say “The Geek shall inherit the Earth”. When I was young and still nerdy rather than just geeky, I had a “beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent Life down Here” T-shirt.

Many nerds eventually mature out of Nerdom in just Geekdom. Most Geeks are content with being geeks. It is not too bad as adults. The Alpha’s are mostly just normal guys and gals now also. Especially by Middle-Age. A great equalizer.

  • note the terms Geek and Nerd have different meaning for different people.

The way I see it, “geek” today basically means a person who is very enthusiastic or obsessed about a particular thing. So while not everybody self-applies the term, it applies to a large number of people today.

Some good theories being bandied about here. Not sure which is right, although Fish has probably hit closest to the mark. My wife has always been less enthralled by MPFC than I, but she chuckles now and again when we watch it. My mom doesn’t care for it at all; my two sisters are both fans, although not particularly gung-ho.

I confess, I actually considered “Jethro Q. Walrustitty, MP” as my username.

“It’s…”
