If the King of Earth divided up all the land equally among all the nations of the earth, what would the size of the resulting nation be?
I’m bad at math and wondering if anyone else already did the computation for some other purpose.
Here’s an estimate: I took the information on this page containing countries and dumped it into Excel. The average area of the 194 countries listed was 688,017 square km. Another way to do this is to determine the total land area of the Earth (which I Googled to be 14,884,7000 square km) and divide it by 194, in which case the average area is 767,252 sqaue km. I assume the discrepancy is from the inclusion of international territories, notably Antarctica. I imagine, too, that there might be some debate over exactly how many entities qualify as countries, but there you go.
For comparison’s sake, 688,017 km[sup]2[/sup] is about the size of Texas or France and all its overseas possesions.
767,252 km[sup]2[/sup] is about the size of Texas and Maine combined or roughly that of Chile.
