What's the best US tax software for when you've worked in multiple states?

See subject line. I lived and earned income in New Mexico and New York last year, and looking for some software to do the filing for me (having given up on doing it by hand, this time). My situation is fairly simple, other than the state change, so two questions:

[ol]
[li]What packages can handle the two-state situation?[/li][li]What packages won’t charge an arm and a leg for it? It seems the usual model is use the federal return as a loss-leader and then charge the real price for the state return, which would hit me twice as hard.[/li][/ol]

The online version of Turbo Tax had no problem with my husband living in NC, but earning income in SC and NC.

Once I entered the W2 from SC, IIRC, it popped up the appropriate questions and filled out all of the appropriate forms.

But did TurboTax require separate payment for each state? That was the impression I got from their website. If there is something that charges a flat rate, that would be awesome.

I have no idea what they charge as he qualified for free federal e-filing, and from what I could tell, the Carolinas have a free e-file arrangement as well. Even if you have to pay, I think it’s just $20 per state.

Yep, they charge me $34.99 for Federal, and $36.99 for each State separately.

I think the distinction is the e-filing is technically free (in that you don’t pay the taxing authority to file), but preparing your return is what costs money.
