So we’re going on vacation starting the 24th, and I’ve wanted to drive 39/139 to 395 for years (goes through Klamath and next to Lava Beds.) We’re driving a passenger van, but the problem is that Alamo does not allow snow chains to be used, no matter what (I can’t find anyone else who does either, and Alamo is the cheapest.) So it’ll all work out fine UNLESS conditions get so bad that there are at least 2 inches of ice on these roads.
Here’s the question: What’s the best way to find out updated road conditions? Web page, phone number, etc etc etc? Also, has anyone driven these roads in the winter in a passenger vehicle? 5 will also get us there, but I’ve wanted to drive that route for such a long time. Thanks, everyone!
Those two links are what I use. They’ve got links to webcams of the worst areas.
Besides that, I’d say that you’ll be fine. We just had a week of cold weather and heavier precipitation, and it’s been sunny since. The roads are not bad unless it’s actively snowing because the plows are really good. Drive slow if you feel uncomfortable. The Lava Beds are great in the winter-- the caves are still like 55 degrees, no matter how cold it is!
Thanks! I don’t know. That stretch of 395 is still making me nervous, so we’re probably going 5 south and then 58 and… (tries to think) ( a big task today) 97.
If you’re looking at I-5, the worst part is the Siskiyou pass just south of Ashland. I can tell you right now that in Ashland, we’ve been warming up lately, with the snow melting off. I wouldn’t hesitate right now to go over the pass; I’m sure it will be just fine.
