A few years ago, my mother-in-law inherited some furs from her mother – a couple of coats and some stoles. Now she’s decided she’d like to sell them.
My sister-in-law was considering just listing them on eBay, but she’s wondering if that’s really the way to get the best price. Would it be better to take them to a vintage clothing shop, or a fur dealer, or is eBay really the way to go? (None of my MIL’s kids or kids-in-law is particularly fur-savvy, since none of us find fur particularly appealing.)
If it matters, my SIL and the coats are in Portland, OR. I’m in Seattle, but other locales might be difficult in terms of in-person sales.
I don’t think fur sells very well in the US anymore. I know at a local (fairly high-end) consignment shop, you can have your pick of mink stoles (the classy kind that wrap around your shoulders, not the one with the freaky mink heads still on them) for about $20.
You might try selling it in Canada, I think fur is a little more socially acceptable there.
Maybe you could check some vintage shops and see what they have to say?
My mother inherited a fur jacket from someone, I intend to burn the thing as soon as she gives it to me. I’m not wearing it and I don’t know anyone of my generation who’d want it …
Hah! Good one!
I mean, incorrect. Maybe in Central or Eastern Europe.
All I can think of is watching the eBay auctions for a month or so and see what fur coat prices fetch there.
I know that there are people out there that make stuffed toys out of recycled fur, and some SCA people use old furs for trimming hats and cloaks, but they’re all looking for a deal and won’t be paying a premium. If no other options show themselves, you may want to try selling to them.
I’m not a fan of fur coats but I hate waste.
