What's the buzz?

“Radical vegans, who don’t eat any animal products, are calling for an end to the oppression of honeybees. They claim that the production of honey uses the forced labor of worker bees. People should shun all honey products, the vegans say, to avoid supporting slave labor.”*

 • as reported in The Week magazine, July 19, 2002.

Radical being the keyword, here.

Likewise, they need to shun the use of many fruits and probably some vegetables as well. Many commercial fruits depend for the pollination on beehives brought into the orchards by beekeepers. So looks like radical vegans would need to give up apples and pears too if they don’t want to exploit slave labor.

I know I could look it up myself… but you’ve already been there-- gimme a link! With respect to the story as it stands, this is just the sort of thing that the media loves to run with. “What’s that you say? You’re a vegan and you don’t like honey?! Hey, theres an idea… All vegans are completely insane and think bees are being oppressed!” I’m not a vegan- I’m not even a vegetarian- but this seems a little “out there” to me.

Why should you want to know? Don’t you mind about the future.

What about all those slave trees, in orchard camps all across Amerika?

Don’t you try to think ahead? Save tomorrow for tomorrow. Think about today instead.

Thank you! I thought that wonderful hijack was going to vanish into obscurity without getting the recognition it deserved. I am vindicated!!!

(now do I owe you two drinks?)

Eonwe, do I get a drink for being the straight guy providing the setup? I was hoping someone would go where you went because the OP title allusion was intentional. I first had “what’s the buzz, tell me what’s happenin’”, but shortened it. eunoia just beat me to the response.

p@cific@812, I don’t have an online cite. The Week is a relatively new magazine that collects news articles from various sources. They, as yet, do not have a web site. In the magazine, the bit about the oppression of honeybees was not attributed to a particular source. I’ve tried numerous Google searches on parts of the text and have come up empty.

While The Week is a publication of the LA Times (as opposed to the National Inquirer for instance) and should have some journalistic integrity, there is no guarantee that this is not just an unfounded rumor.

Besides, this article sounds like something PETA would do rather than an organization of vegetarians, regardless of how radical they are.

Maybe the AFL-CIO should get involved.

Where’s John Belushi when you really need him? :: sigh ::

For a straight guy, you sure know your showtunes.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. (ducks and runs)

Ooooh. Good one!! ~grin~
