I saw something like that. the guy went to a feed store and bought a big sack of wheat - then each day, he would take about a cupful of it, wash it in a strainer, put it in a large thermos with some chopped vegetables and, if available, a little meat, top up with boiling water and seal it.
After six or eight hours, he would open it up and it would be something a bit like a stew - I think whole wheat is still pretty chewy when it’s done like this - and prolonged steeping in hot water can’t be great for the vitamins in the veg, but he claimed to be able to feed a family for less than a dollar a day this way.
I think you’d need a family that is either very understanding, or one that has no other choice.

HillBilly Housewife/ is a website all about low-cost home cooking from scratch. She has examples of menus that will feed a family of 4-6 for either $45 or $70 a week. Her site has terrific recipes and other tips on cooking on a budget.

I’m sure someone will be along to tell us why neither of our statements are entirely accurate, however…
It’s my understanding that normal people with normally functioning internals (especially kidneys) can handle far more than the recommended daily amount of sodium with no long term effects. Yes, there are those (a great many people) who are predisposed to sodium-induced hypertension. But it is not true, in general, that high sodium intake will cause high blood pressure with no other underlying causes. I’ve seen this fact stated many times on the Dope.
