What's the cheapest video card worth buying now?

Yeah, that’s something I would feel much better about. It’s pretty decent in and of itself, plus it’s an am5 chip meaning it can actually be upgraded in a meaningful way several years from now. Even if they introduce am6 more quickly than expected, there is always the option to upgrade it to the 7800X3D, which is an actual upgrade that could be considered worth doing. I’m not sure upgrading 13400 to a 14700 down the road would be worth the money.

The image shows a large air cooler so I think, in this instance, “Aqua” means “Spin the cool words wheel to name this thing”

Agreed with the general direction of everything else: An i7-14700 should last a good long while, a 16GB Nvidia card would be nice and I would assume it’s upgradable with off the shelf parts if someone wanted. It’s really only the big names like Dell/Alienware, HP, etc who can afford to have custom made boards and PSUs that you need to look out for. AMD is probably the way to go for the probably AM5 socket longevity (based on the AM4’s record) if that’s a concern but the i7-14700 shouldn’t be obsolete any time soon and would offer a lot more power out of the box today.

Well then, I’ll probably see about getting that NewEgg PC. The price point matched my expectation a little better too. And it sounds like it will do everything I need it to do for the forseeable future.

Whelp, the computer is ordered. I was hoping I could milk my current PC for a few more years, but it is what it is.

I have to admit, I’m pretty psyched to play TW:Warhammer, Helldivers, or Cyberpunk on high settings with good FPS.

When I was a kid, I never had a console; I was a PC gamer with access to only my parents’ computer, which very much was not a gaming PC (and games were always the furthest things from their minds when they bought a computer). So I got used to playing mostly old games, on low graphics, as slideshows.

In college I had a half decent laptop, which meant I could play slightly less old games on slightly higher settings.

When I first got my PC, and even more so when I first put in the 1070, I finally had access to a decent gaming computer. But it didn’t keep up with new games, of course.

This PC should give me a few more years of parity!

It’s projected to arrive Friday, which would be great! Just in time for the weekend!

That’s exciting. Definitely get the FSR 3.0 mod for CP2077. It does a lot of work for non-RTX cards like that 7700 XT.

Awesome!

You didn’t mention which one; based on the click-throughs I’m guessing you got the nicer one with the 14700 and 16 GB on the video card. If so that’s awesome but either way it will be very nice.

It should definitely give you many years of joy. And just like the system you are replacing, you’ll be able to upgrade the video card in 5 years or whatever and greatly extend its life, potentially reaching the 10-year goal you are hoping for.

About the 4060 TI, the enthusiast snobs who would never consider buying a card in that tier like to shit on it, but the people who actually bought it seem to like it quite a bit. I think it will serve you well.

Is it Friday yet? What about now? Now?

I assumed it was the R5 7500F & RX 7700XT one due to being in budget but any of them will definitely be a fun upgrade over a 3rd or 4th gen system (based on the 10 years old) and 1070 (which is still a workable card for some stuff but let’s upgrade!)

Correct, that’s the one I got.

My new computer has arrived! Can’t wait to set it up.

Nice! Fun weekend project. Or tonight, depending on your excitement level.

Well, we are off to a less than stellar start.

Setup was easy enough but as soon as I launched Helldivers a horrible rattling noise emenated from the PC. After a fair bit of troubleshooting, I identified the source of the problem: the graphics card, which is mounted a few incbes above a cage that contains the power unit and has two fans on the bottom, was hitting some cables that ran underneath. When the GPU fans got fast enough, the cables got hit.

I sent an angry email to the manufacturer and propped the graphics card up with a screwdriver for now.

Just as I prepared to actually dive, my daughter started crying. Currently rocking her with a bottle…

Other than the tangled cable issue, how did you like the play the game run in the brief moments you had it up? Big improvement over the old system?

Yeah, unfortunately by the time baby was asleep it was long past 11 and I was ready for sleep too.

I was running around the ship on Ultra, and while I didn’t have my FPS counter up, things felt very smooth. I think that aspect will be fine.

It’s not for everyone but cable management is one of the reasons I prefer to build my own machines. Not that mine is impeccable or anything but at least I’m certain I’m clear of the moving parts.

Well, with a screwdriver propping up the graphics card, I am able to play.

Got through a mission in Helldivers; 100 FPS on Ultra, which is fun. 2560:1080 resolution. I’m now playing Warhammer 3, because I’m worried my daughter won’t sleep through a whole Dive. So far it’s giving me 60-100 FPS on Ultra as well.

You can pick up a sag brace for a few bucks on Amazon if you don’t like the screwdriver, assuming it’s a very small screwdriver that you have vertically propping up the video card. Here’s a picture I posted last month of my machine that shows the sag brace I got from Amazon for around $7:

Aivalas GPU Bracket, Adjustable Graphics Card Bracket with Magnet, GPU Brace Support Video Card Support for Prevent Graphics Card from Drooping (A Set) https://a.co/d/7iZzxkF

(I went with that one because of the cute little level it comes with. No idea if I’ll ever use it, but it is cute!)

Nice! I think Warhammer is more CPU dependent than the average game. If so, it would seem like you have a pretty nice balance in your machine. Unlike mine, where my CPU is Danny DeVito to my GPU’s Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I went the LEGO route. Something I already had in abundance that is endlessly customizable and sturdy. Plastic, but if it gets hot enough in there to melt LEGO, I’ve got way bigger problems than that.
