Is there an official line on what the police should do in the event that the country is occupied by a foreign power?
Do they continue to enforce the law on civilians and ignore whoever is in government? This would be problematic because the law they swore to uphold is no longer the law of the land. What if the new regime has a law that says “round up the jews”?
Should they abandon their posts and join the resistance? In some ways this sounds like the most attractive option but do they have an actual legal duty to do this? And if all the police abandon their posts then there would be massive amounts of domestic crime - murder, robbery etc. Maybe they should stay in the job in order to hold society together in these tough times while waiting for the revolution or an outside power to come to the rescue?
This may be a GQ but I’m not sure there’s any definitive answer to it.
