What's the first subtitled film you ever saw?

My fiancee and I were asking each other random questions the other night, and I came up with “What is the first subtitled film you ever saw?” (Not in a language you understand).

I think the first subtitled film for which I needed subtitles that I can recall seeing was the Swedish film My Life as a Dog in 1985 or 1986.

“Ehat’s”…? :smack:

It would probably be the “The Red Balloon”, which I saw a few times as a kid in the early seventies. At one point the protagonist, who is French, calls “ballon!” (which in French comes out like “balong”). The subtitle is simply, “Balloon!” The film otherwise has no other dialogue.

The first one I remember seeing is Raise the Red Lantern, when I took a Chinese class at nerd camp, I’m thinking age 11. I’m so, so pissed it’s out of print on DVD.

No, Ehat was not the first subtitled film I ever saw. Is it any good?

Actually, I can’t recall the first, but if you don’t mind, may I use this thread to ask about a fairly recent one I saw with my wife, whose title escapes us?

It was a simple character study of a Icelandic (iirc) fishery owner who was dying and brought all his children together one last time to (again, iirc) attempt to determine which of those losers would inherit his business.

Sounds blase, but was really a good little touching, engrossing film.

Sorry for the bad joke and hijack.

Last Year at Marienbad, 1961.

Probably one of the first movies I saw period, no way to say which specific one.

I really can’t remember. Possibly Elvira Madigan or The Seventh Seal.

Like Water for Chocolate, in '92 or thereabouts.

No. Clue.

Would have been in the early 90s. '93, probably. When I was getting into my ‘pretentious git’ phase.

I can’t remember. The earliest one I do remember was Das Boot, but I know I had watched subtitled films before that one.

I believe “I am Curious yellow” was subtitled. It was so long ago.

My first thought was King of Hearts, which I saw when I was in high school – but then I remembered The Two of Us, which came out when I was 12.

(Of course, King of Hearts actually came out before that, but I didn’t see it till '71 or '72.)

The first subtitled movie I remember seeing in a theater was 1973’s The Emigrants.

I saw King Of Hearts before Das Boot. Funny, I don’t remember the subtitles.

“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” I’ve never been into foreign films, and I can’t think of another.

Although when I watch DVDs at home I typically turn on subtitles. It helps.

Hey, I think I saw that! It’s just a realist film of a balloon floating around, and it’s journey. It was kind of like “Paddle to the Sea” where you see a kid’s carving of a Native Indian in a canoe floating the riverways of Canada until it finally makes it to the ocean.

The first I can remember is Rashomon, in a high school Japanese class (circa 1994). Before that I saw The Hunt for Red October, which starts with some subtitles.

Me, too, I remember watching it on Bravo. I was about 12 or 13.

(I’d seen plenty of subtitled films in French class at school, but I’m discounting those. I had to watch them b/c they were for class, and I don’t remember what any of them were)

I’ve seen plenty of movies that contained subtitles in parts, THfRO among them, but the first one I saw that had subtitles throughout the entire movie was Life is Beautiful.
