At the time I joined, I was in a kinda low spot in my life.
Just been through a bad this, was looking at a crummy
that, etc. So I thought “well, I’ve been reading the Dope
since the Lame-O days. Let’s join up and see how that changes
my life.”
So, I did the paperwork, got the various certifications
in order and then I couldn’t think of a cool username.
We all know - names are power here. ™
As it turned out, I was late for an appointment to get an
undescended testicle seen to, so I screamed to myself:
“For God’s sake, put something down - ANYTHING! Oh my GOD!
That’s what you’re putting down?!? FOR CHRISSAKE, DON’T
PRESS SEND!” “Shit.”
Back in the early days of the web, when AoL chatrooms were the hotness and emoticons were more of a thing, I was joking around with some friends about emoticons to go with different sentences.
Dave Barry had a joke about putting them on classic literature, like:
It was the best of times :), it was the worst of times
Call me Ishmael
IRL my first name is Kirk. I have introduced myself as “Kirk as in Captain James T.” for basically my whole life. This has, at times, allowed people to pronounce and spell my name correctly.
When I started posting here the first responses I got were often along the lines of…
“Wait, we have been a board for 13 years and you are the first person to have this username?”
My last name’s Nottingham, and at work they called me Nott. Somehow, they got to thinking of me as a human encyclopedia. Don’t know the answer? Ask Nott.
I’ve been looking over long-ago threads of late, and wondered what happened to many of the old-time posters, LIKE YOURSELF man. Lamenting even. When did you drop spooje?
And of course, over the intervening years, I have confused Typo Negative with Typo Knig. Never had such issues with spooje! You were one of a kind.
See how important usernames are, choose one with care kids.
