Yup, same here. Except in my case it’s a not-for-profit and it only happens at certain times.
A little over 3 grand in twenties.
I get nervous when I’m carrying more than $100, so when I sold my car for 10k and had to carry the money to the bank I was freaking out. It was to go towards my house deposit, so I was clutching my bag and eyeballing frail little old ladies for fear they’d grab my bag and run (shuffle) off with it.
I collected about a thousand dollars – MANY years ago – from my friends and went and bought a pound of dope.
$7000 - bought a used houseboat for cash.
The day after I bought it the engine grenaded and caught fire. I went to the bank and got a $6000 cashiers check for another motor.
Expensive weekend.
$12,000 - We cleared out our travel savings account and took the bus across town to buy travelers cheques. Thereby saving $120 in bank commission.
When we said we wanted it in cash, the bank was a little inquisitive about it and told us to be careful. (We were younger then, and were all but giddy as our holiday grew nearer.)
I thought it was thrilling, mostly because of the 10 months of exotic travel it was going to provide. My worry wart spouse however couldn’t really relax and enjoy it.
Mind you once in was converted, mostly, into travelers cheques, he relaxed enough to carry it around for the next 10 months!
$3,500. I was on my way to see a man about a bass saxophone. I didn’t buy it.
After my very first time at a casino I won about $800 playing Texas Hold 'Em. I’ve never carried that much cash before or since. Typically I carry about $100 in my wallet at all times.
$40,000 CDN
It was a float for a non profit casino I was working at.
Scarey and exhilerating
FML
About $6000. But it was in Indian rupees, so it made quite a brick.
It was during RAGBRAI one weekend (it’s a big bicycle ride across Iowa thing) when I was in high school. I was working as a convenience store clerk in a little town, and I was responsible for making the deposits on the weekends, usually about 1000 to 5000 dollars, depending on how busy it was.
Bicyclists drink lots of Gatorade and such…I think my deposits that weekend were around 10,000 to 12,000. Took me waaaaaaaay too long to count, and then I had to drive it over to the bank after dark, park, walk through a dark parking lot, then a block down the not-well-lit street while wearing my store uniform and carrying an obvious deposit bag, then stand there glancing over my shoulder while I fumble to unlock the bank door to access the little entryway where the night deposit that can accommodate bags instead of envelopes was located.
Could be worse, though. My mom routinely carries deposits of more than 25,000 dollars to the bank by herself…in Memphis. The company refuses to pay for an armored car, and when the people who work for her company get robbed of their deposits, they get fired. Totally ridiculous.
$140,000. I worked for a small town bank and it was part of my job. The Feds actually send that through the mail, but it has a special bag and procedures, and what not. I was 17 at the time.
As for my own, non-insured money, $6500 I think.
I keep about $2500 (hidden) in the house and $500 on my person without worrying. Most people I know who hate cash have been ripped off via card fraud.
Just under the legal limit of US$10K most times I fly into the USA. I like cash.
I work in international development, and in the mid 90s it was not uncommon to have to shuttle $10,000 from our HQ in DC to field offices in the former Soviet Union. They’d count it out, I’d sign a chit and put it in the bottom of my bookbag and forget about it.
In 2003 before Iraq was totally collapsed, we would shuttle operating funds from Kuwait to Baghdad by car. I wasn’t alone, but there would usually be four of us in two cars with about $100,000 in a bag with us. My friend would tease me and say “hey can I borrow $50,000? but only if you have it on you.”
40k for a business I worked for it was only for a short trip to the bank. We sold some equipment the buyer paid in cash. It was mostly 20’s and in a paper shopping bag.
I work with a friend of mine every once in a while doing conventions in the US and in other countries. All the money being handled for buying or selling items is in cash so it isn’t unusual for one of us to have 10k on us at a given point. I always find myself thinking as I’m going out to dinner or back to the hotel it would really suck if I got mugged right now. Thankfully most would be muggers don’t suspect the guy in a t-shirt and jeans to have a beat up backpack full of cash.
JPY 4,500,000, which is about US$38,000. But that was just from my office to the bank three blocks away.
In 1976 I ran a petrol station and would regularly drop of £2k - £3k in the bank’s night deposit.
One time I brought a load of cash back from Africa as a favour - a fat A4 envelope, I did not look inside.
I collect rents the first of the month. I think about $28K at one time.
probably around 600 canadian or so.
About USD120k worth of Chinese RMB to buy my first flat. The biggest Chinese denomination is about USD12. All wrapped up it was about 1 meter long worth of paper money. Took hours to count it out at the developer. Thank god the Chinese banking system is much more modern these days.
I did see a guy withdraw about USD2 million worth of Chinese currency from our stock brokerage. He had like a big blanket on the floor, kept throwing down rMB100k increments (USD12k), grabbed all four corners and slung it over his back and walked out to his car in the parking lot.
