Well, I still haven’t fixed my cooling fan. And it seems that the copy of dragon’s lair I bought on DVD doesn’t work in 2000. So I have to install 98 as a dual boot, which is an utter pain in the ass to do one 2000 is installed.
Today, I was just happily typing away when the screen flickered and next thing I know I have a Peanuts theme. I have no idea how this happened.
My husband swears he is innocent. I have my doubts.
And there is just too much stuff plugged into it. I don’t even know what most of those wires are for. I keep telling my husband that this makes the computer very uphappy, but he just laughs and pats me on the head and tells me I’m being ridiculous.
I knew that somebody out there would understand. Wires are creepy…my whole decorating scheme is based on hiding wires, cables, and anything of that nature. I am scared to look behind the computer desk. He has the scanner running through the zip drive which is connected to the printer. I am assuming that the printer is hooked up to the computer, but I just can’t figure out where.
Otherwise, I like my computer just fine. It’s much nicer than my very first computer, which was hooked up to the tv. I always had to wait until my Dad came home to use it, because you had to unhook the Atari first, and that meant touching wires! YUCK. Also, I’m not sure what we did with the darn thing other than write Basic programs that made all the colors (I think we had 7 or something) appear on the tv. Oh, and you could program it to play Mary had a Little Lamb and other fine songs listed in the manual.
You know what’s annoying? When you are working and all of a sudden POOF the computer restarts for no rhyme or reason. That is just ONE of the truly BIZARRE things my computer has been doing for the past 2 weeks. I’m getting a new one on Wednesday though…
[li]Every 30 minutes, my hard drives starts acting up and my computer freezes for 15 sec.[/li]
[li]The computer sounds like a motorcycle engine when I start it and the noise lasts for 30 sec.[/li]
[li]My soundcard/modem/joystick/microphone combo card is incompatible with every game I try to install.[/li] tatertot, it sounds like there’s a screen saver that turns on every second. Check the settings to see if that’s the case.
Techchick…it will NEVER, EVER accept NT after a win98 install. I don’t care if you low-level, high-level, hell, it just won’t do it.
I tried for a week…then I bought a new hard drive. If you REALLY want an NT-like OS, get Win2K. Hands down. It’ll install on anything as long as the hardware’s kosher.
–Baglady, happy with her iMac at home but being forced to use a PC at work…
Louie, is that an IBM Thinkpad? Mine does the same thing…but it’s been better since I re-formatted and installed win2k.
Other’n that, mine’s peachy and I hope my new Athlon system rocks like I think it will…
Nope, it’s a Packard Bell Platinum Supreme (don’t I feel special? ) Anyways, I use the computer everyday and it’s been 3 years now that I had it, so I think it’s almost time for it to croak
Reformat? No thanks, I already did that 3 times in the computer’s life, I’m not going through that nightmare again.
1.) I still have not been able to get it to load my NIC card with the 32 bit enhanced drivers. 16 bit will load during boot-up only.
2.) Win98 Start menu programs still do not list correctly. I have tried the fix from Microsoft’s site that involves the registry edit yet I still get things out of order.
It can be done, you have to fdisk and set it at FAT16…Windows 98 uses FAT32. Formatting, no matter how it’s done, is not enough to get your Win98 machine to be NT.
