What's the most irritating thing about your PC?

rubes:

Yes. Replace that power supply. Hope it’s still under warranty. If it won’t power back up until it’s set for 15-20 minutes, that sounds like a pretty clear heat issue to me.

I gotta disagree TC. Sorry, no amount of FDisking and resetting partitions will allow you to install NT on a former Win98 machine.

When Win98 installs the FAT32 partition, it permanently writes in(from memory), the MBR and nothing you can do will cure it.

I worked with the head of Applied Materials datacenter(I was in IT at the time, for several weeks. I set it at FAT16 I don’t know how many times.

It possibly might be Hard drive-centric, but it was un-doable on my drive.

Although, you might rock ebough to convince NT’s installer otherwise…

{slight hijack}
I had a Texas Instruments 99/4A that you had to save info to a cassette tape. Somehow, I programmed a Frank Zappa guitar solo (Black Napkins) NOTE BY NOTE! Yook me two weeks. Then my dad taped some Benny Goodman over it.

The biggest problem I have is with WIN98 taking over all the system resources and slowing everything down to a crawl. I mainly use about six different programs and the kids play some games on it but every once in a while, I just have to reboot the entire system to get things to run again. I know it’s now a hardware prob as I built this stupid thing from the frame up and there’s MORE than enough memory. I’m sure it’s partially because I need a bigger power supply. ummm…I’ve already burned up two

Allright, after thinking about what an ass I made myself sound like, and having an hour and a half to think it over, I’ll retract my statement.

However…

Please do not doubt my ability to use such an easy program as FDISK, and do not doubt that you can use the low-level formatting program packaged by most disk makers without harming your drive.

And also, I stand by my difficulties in installing NT4 on a drive with a previous install of 98. After monkeying around with it for so long, I gave up. I tried NTFS and FAT16.

Once I gave up, I was able to put win95 FAT16 and FAT32 on the drive, but still no NT. I even tried installing NT over the 95 install. It just didn’t like the 98 install.

So, I won’t say it’s not do-able…it just wasn’t in my case.

THousand pardons for acting like an ass to you TechChick…

No worries.

As for “doubting your abilities” I don’t know the level of knowledge you have, so I wasn’t doubting so much as lacking in my knowledge of your abilities. Also, my remark regarding low level formatting was directed at MadPoet. In fact I pointed out that it can be done

Anti Pro, what you got is heat, in other words, put in another fan & make sure the CPU fan is working. Some PCs have many fans. YOu can never have too many fans. They are only like $5-$10 anyway.

Hate about my computer? Well, the flat black paint is all scratched, so it doesn’t look as cool as it did when I first got it…

OK, OK… The video. Whatever the laptop (last year’s PowerBook) has under the hood videochipwise, it just doesn’t compare with a decent desktop computer. I’m not a gamer, so I don’t need state-of-the-art 3D etc etc, but in some applications (especially FileMaker Pro if graphic images are stored in the database) it is awfully slow to draw the images on-screen, and scrolling through a list view with thumbnails can be agonizing. It’s only a speed complaint; the quality is fine, and I do have dual monitor support with 32 bit color at up to 1152x867 on each.

The bloody trackpad. But then I hate all trackpads. And those silly “eraserhead” thingies between the H and J key are worse. And trackballs are pretty horrid too. And you can’t exactly use a mouse when you’re in transit and have no desk to sit at. But why the heck can’t a laptop have a touch-screen?

I can only run the 500 PIII at 620, and keep the system stable. I was trying for 666.

Thanks for the advice. I got a little advert a while back quoting that price range, but they also had a 32 meg upgrade for a little over 100 bucks. Install I would most certainly need help with, but I think I have some computer savvy friends…but I would rather get pro help…just in case…
Anyway, back on topic. STUPID COMPUTER!
And now some data cluster has been corrupted. I think it was something I downloaded…but the scandisk program now freezes when it runs…so I dunno what the problem is.
