My husband and I are typically pretty frugal with grocery shopping, and our family of 5 (6, really, though one of us is only a month old) usually eats about $75-85 a week in groceries - not counting paper towels, aluminum foil, diapers, etc., that we normally buy at the grocery store as well.
A month ago, after the newest addition and with a significant temporary pay cut, our accountant informed us that we’d most likely qualify (albeit temporarily) for food stamps, so I went and applied and was awarded an ungodly amount on a debit card.
First time in years that I bought groceries with no thought as to how much I was spending, just buying whatever I thought the kids would like, what was healthiest, baby formula, lots of fresh fruits and veggies. We had an empty stand-alone freezer at home just waiting to be filled up, so I bought two cartloads of stuff - around $425 worth - and lugged it all home. Had a seriously difficult time packing it all into my empty car trunk. Haven’t been grocery shopping since, either. (Except to buy milk and other perishables.)
