Well, my high school was the fairly prosaic White Oak High School Vikings, college was a bit more interesting with the North Carolina State University Wolfpack, but I have to love the high school my little brothers went to, in Atlanta, TX:
I went to a Catholic High School. We were the “Knights.”
I only remember the unofficial anthem:
We’re the Alma Mater
Protectors of the Knight
The Horny Sons-of-Bitches
That’d Rather Fuck than Fight
Hady-Hidy
God Almighty
Who the Hell Am I?
Bim Bam
God-Damn
I’m from Alter High.
The school was just south of the Quinault reservation on the Washington coast, and the student body was a bit over a third native. Hyak is a word in the Coastal Salish language, meaning “swift.” It’s also the name of a mountain in the Cascades.
Our symbol was a foot in a winged sandal, which we called a “fleetfoot.”
Since I graduated many years ago, the Quinault nation built it’s own school, and North Beach is now in a new building 15 miles farther south. But they still honor the original locals by the team name.
My junior high team was the Seahawks, and we had the name for about 50 years before Seattle got a pro football franchise.
The Eagles, also known as the War Eagles. We just won some semi- or quarter-final thing in the state last season. Apparently the team was good, but I never made it to a game.
It’s a small world…I grew up in Anderson, IN! I don’t know if it’s just me but coming from a relatively small town it’s kind of shocking to find people that even know where it’s located, let alone someone who grew up there themselves.
Sorry, I got a little too excited there. In keeping with the topic…we were the Scots.
There has been occasional complaint over the years about the use of “demon.” I think in recent years they’ve downplayed it and the unofficial nickname now is Big Blue. Maybe they should have spelled it daemon and claimed it was taken from…Plato, I think.
