What's the Official Mod ruling on "Drumpf"?

I’m terrible at writing apps.

On the other hand I have lots of free time.

Give me your password and uhhh lets say 5 dollars a day and I can edit you SDMB experience for the better

BigT’s could probably be modified very quickly. Just find the line that says “replace Trump with* Drumpf*” and swap in “regards Shodan” and " ".

Yeah, I really don’t get what the big deal is. It’s not as if it’s being changed to something insulting. I’m sure I’ve used it before, but in each any every case in was inadvertent or just plain lazy. I’m not a Dem, but I can’t imagine gaining anything, even a scintilla of a chuckle, from “The Democrat Party”. ::shrug::

It’s just because it’s meant as a (very minor) slur, at least some of the time – many folks who don’t like the Democrats use it specifically because they know it annoys Democratic supporters. Not a huge deal, but I think it’s childish and obnoxious.

There’s very few times I can say I agree with you 100%, but I agree with you 100%. The outrage over “Democrat Party” is just bizarre to me. How is it even possible to give a fuck about this?

It’s the equivalent of intentionally (and repeatedly) mispronouncing or misspelling the name of someone you don’t like, and pretending that you didn’t do it intentionally.

“Hi, Hay-lee.”
“My name’s Hallie. Rhymes with Allie, remember? We talked about this last week.”
“Oh yeah, sorry.”
[several days later]
“Hi there, Hay-lee.”
“It’s Hallie, goddammit!”
[suppressing a giggle] “Oh, sorry! Silly me! I don’t know why I keep forgetting that!”

It’s a petty, childish insult designed to get under a person’s skin.

Anytime I hear someone say, “I don’t understand what the big deal is about this ‘Democrat Party’ thing,” I’m reasonably certain I’m talking to a Republican who secretly thinks it’s high-larious.

A bit like Shodans sign off really.

Nah…it doesn’t bother me and I am for sure a Democrat.

In your “Hallie” example above, I wouldn’t waste my time getting irritated. I would just find the mispronouncer to be a bit dim.

“Democrat Party” does not bother me, because there really is a Democrat Party in Thailand. The country’s oldest political party, “Democrat” is it’s official rendering in English. I’m so used to “Democrat” that “Democratic Party” sounds a bit off to me now.

I wasn’t referring to people who don’t feel personally insulted by the phrase themselves. I’m a Democrat myself, and my reaction to it is just an eye-roll.

I’m talking about people who claim that they simply can’t understand how anyone could possibly feel insulted by the phrase “Democrat Party.” If it’s clearly intended as an insult, why begrudge people feeling genuinely irritated by it? That always struck me as disingenuous.

Because of all the times they get irritated when it is not clearly meant to insult.

That’s true. There is no way to stop someone who insists on being offended.

Shodan

Very possibly, but sometimes it probably is. Why not just call it the Democratic party, as party members, officials, and supporters refer to it?

I don’t understand your concern over a simple, and common, closing to a letter or post. Does it violate some top secret internet protocol?

Or are people just trying to control what others are permitted to say on the internet?

I don’t “begrudge” anyone their feelings of being insulted. Still, rising above the fray rarely has negative consequences, and I might reserve my highest levels approval for those who can’t be bothered to get their panties in a twist because someone thinks that leaving off “ic” is supposed to be annoying.

Because sometimes people make typos or mistakes. Or it is not that big a deal to refer to a party made up of Democrats as the Democrat party.

Is anyone who refers to the ‘Republican party’ insulting the GOP? The GOP is composed of Republicans, so they must be. IYSWIM.

As I said, it is mostly people who want to take offense, who have seized on something silly and want to establish it as offensive by sheer repetition.

It is like my signoff. ‘What you really mean is Fuck You! You’re insulting me! It’s trolling if you do something that I don’t like once I have told you not to!’ Etc.

Shodan

Yes, that’s precisely it. Well done.

For me, I’m not annoyed when people deliberately leave off the “ic.” But I note it. It goes down in their impermanent (because I’m forgetful) record.

Sure. And some people throw around childish insults, even when asked to stop – and sometimes (not always), that’s why folks use “Democrat party”. Do you think this never happens? Would you reject a kind request to call it the Democratic party?

A tiny deal. Not really important at all.

But also a tiny request – just call that organization what members call it. No big deal.

 No, because “Grand Old Party” isn’t the name of the party, they are the “Republican Party”.

Blame Thomas Jefferson for naming his party the Democratic-Republican Party and not the Republican-Democrat(s) Party.

If one wants their opinions about American politics to be given any weight, knowing the actual names of the players would be a good place to start.
