What's the Official Mod ruling on "Drumpf"?

I feel the same way about LMGTFY. URL redirects in general are not something I like. Using one to be a passive-aggressive asshole? I would gladly make that a banning offense.

LMGTFY (or even just saying how easily something can be googled) isn’t permitted in GQ. If the answer is that easy to google, just google it and post the answer.

This is specifically mentioned in the General Questions Rules & FAQs sticky at the top of the forum.

The rules in use on this board for adjusting quoted text (ellipses, bracket, and noting added emphasis) are a historical standard, and any forum that does not require them is untrustworthy and intellectually dishonest.

You just can’t claim people said something that they did not say. (Well, obviously, you can but it’s wrong and deceitful, and you will get caught and called out for it.)

People try this technique in debates a lot, but it is less and less successful, given how easy it is to disprove. I’ve noticed a new strategy, claiming the changed - pardon me, “paraphrased” - quote means the same thing, but, obviously, it doesn’t or it wouldn’t have been changed.

In MPSIMS it is not expressly forbidden however it depends on the thread. Depending on the subject it could easily be a threadshit or hijack. Sorry, but it’s not as clear cut in MPSIMS as it is in GQ.

I believe that political jabs are not allowed in Cafe Society either, right?

Again, it depends. If it’s being a jerk, a hijack, or threadshitting, then it’s a problem. I’m having trouble thinking of a scenario in cafe society in which a political jab would be ok, but it’s possible, I guess.

More or less.

A jab is, pretty much by definition, jerkish. I suppose a political joke needn’t be, though.

Yeah. That’s where the judgement call comes in- what’s the overall tone of the thread, does the comment cross a line, is it directed at posters or others etc. that’s the hard part of making those calls.

If I have an app that replaces “Big T” with “regards Shodan” or “lets go down to the quarry and throw shit in there” will I get modded?

No, that’s someone pointing out that if you are aware of what the rule is and keep violating it anyway, you will get punished. If you disagree with a rule and how it is punished, make your case to persuade people. But in the meantime, don’t expect to get away with continuing to violate the rule.

Wait, you think the rule is bad, but you don’t want it changed? So you like bad rules?

[Quote=BigT]
And I continue to note that you haven’t answered my question. No mod has directly, but as I can see no rules saying otherwise, I will be releasing my extension, and I will mention it so that those who want to use it can. Since it doesn’t affect the board in any way, you shouldn’t have any problem with it.

I’m surprised you thought you had to ask permission for this. As you say, it doesn’t violate any rules.

So if I make an app that automatically changes every instance of “Black Lives Matter” to “Penises Matter” or every instance of “Christian” to “Poopyhead”, I should get a pass when my app changes quotes from other people? Because the app did it, so I didn’t intend to change someone else’s words, but I still changed their words, and the quote still says something they disagree with and kinda makes fun of them in the process, but it’s not my fault, it’s my app’s fault? That’s really the position you’re defending?

Look, it was human initiated when the human installed and activated the app without regards to how it works, and uses the app knowing it can and will change quotes.

You are responsible for your posts, even if you decide to use an app or a feature to make things easier or funnier for yourself.

Simple. Don’t use an app that causes you to violate the rules, or accept punishment for violating the rules.

BigT provided an easy answer that allows you to continue to see “Drumpf” everywhere but not change quote boxes.

Why is it Jonathan Chance’s, or any moderator’s, responsibility to find a way to make a 3rd party app installed on individual browsers work compatibly with the rules here? It’s not a feature on this board, it’s something the user installs on their own to their own computer. Jonathan Chance listed the obvious answers. They may not be satisfying, but they are the ones he can provide.

So you’re expecting the moderators to step forward and volunteer to create a new add on, or a fix to the one that is out there? Why is it their responsibility to do anything with third party add ons?

How come it is the responsibility of the board moderators to advocate for a third party add on? Has Shalmanese, or any party who wants a Drumpfinator app, thanked you? Said they’d use your fix? Or have they ignored you, too?

Poor Big T.

The big app he comes up with is the equivalent of thalidomide.

For what it’s worth, the same applies in IMHO. The context of the thread would matter a great deal.

Exactly. And, how are the mods supposed to know if the change was done by a human or by an app? If apps are allowed to change text in a quote box, that’s a perfect out for everyone who changes text: “I have this app that changes the text, mods, honest, so you can’t note me for that.”

Maybe we can replace the mods with apps. If you get a waring you shouldn’t have gotten, too bad. The app did it!!!

Heh.

PS. I’m probably about to get banned for “free speech”…so stay tuned…gawd I love irony so late in the evening. It’s like napalm but better.

Sometime when you’re not drunk, you should ask someone to explain what irony is. And free speech. And while you’re at it, napalm.

No, but possibly eviscerated by some.

No but if you make one that replaces “regards shodan” with a blank, I’d appreciate it!

Q: “Do you like Trumpling?”

A: “I don’t know, you silly boy—I’ve never Trumpled!”
