1) What’s the story behind the name you chose for yourself here?
It’s a strange story, but in high school, I assigned myself and my friends aliases. Mostly we used them so that we could write notes for each other and leave them in the common areas to be picked up, and other people wouldn’t know who they were for or what they were about. The aliases were deliberately gender neutral–at least where first and middle initials only were used. This was, of course, before the advent of text messaging.
There was also a club aspect to it, and there was a supposed hierarchy amongst the members, but it was mostly just a joke.
Q.N. Jones (leader)
W.N. Smith (sidekick)
M.N. Black (first associate)
P.N. Green (2nd)
?.N. Brown (3rd)
?.N. Grey (4th)
?.N. Brown (5th)
C.N. Nelson (token male)
These days, we’d probably get reported as the second coming of the Trenchcoat Mafia. Anyway, I’ve used Q.N. Jones as an alias ever since then, especially when I want to be anonymous online.
2) Do you use it everywhere?
No. I use two different online aliases. I use something else in places where I don’t care if someone recognizes me. Because this place has a bit of a confessional element at times, I prefer to stay anonymous.
3) If not, what other interesting aliases do you use online?
The other is based on a childhood nickname.
4a) Is your username gender neutral/confusing?
Yes. Most people assume that anyone using a name with the configuration F.M. Lastname is a guy, and I’m not. I’ve thought about putting a Ms. in front of my user name, but that just looks stupid to me.
4b) Has this ever caused you problems and/or entertainment?
Minor irritation.
